Based on drawings from DaVinci's Codex Atlanticus, this Pathfinders catapult kit uses a pair of bent wooden arms as springs to launch clay balls (included) over (4) meters at enemy fortifications (not included, go make your own enemies). The assembled model will be approx 9" tall on a 10" x 7-1/4" base. Made from pre-cut, untreated wood from sustainable forests, and built with pegs for added strength and verisimilitude. For ages 12 and up.

Use this little stainless beauty to teach teenagers and older students how heat engines work Then keep it on your desk, where you deserve to have it! This low-temperature-differential Stirling engine is beautifully machined. It works with hot water, ice water, a combination of hot water with ice cubes, or a hair dryer. It measures 5-3/4" tall with a 3-5/8" dia flywheel and a 3-1/2" dia x 7/8" tall base. The speed with hot water is approx 150 rpm. This is a real showpiece, the best we've ever seen at this price. Includes a 7-page instruction booklet.

For archeologically minded numismatists, now comes the "Dirty Old Coins" kit, complete with (5) genuine, hand-struck ancient coins from 1,500 to over 2,000 years old, all with their own authentic dirt and ancient schmutz still attached. All "Made in the Roman Empire. Assembled in the U.S.A." You get a 12pp instruction booklet, a PC or Mac-compatible CD-ROM coin image database for identification, a stiff brush, double-lens magnifier, and cleaning and de-corrosion fluids. Most coins will be worth a few dollars, the supplier says, but some rare finds could be worth "hundreds or even thousands." Plenty of fun either way.

When ornithopters roamed the earth…oops, no, it just sounds like a dinosaur. The ornithopter was one of Leonardo's masterful designs, although this one just led to a bunch of guys on winged bicycles plummeting to the earth in the 19th century. Still extremely cool, however, in this kit version. Pre-cut, unpainted wooden pieces assemble with pegs to make a crank-operated moving model with a 24" wingspan, complete with a human figure, which our model-guru calls a 15th C. crash-test dummy.

Teach the children how the wind can create electricity with this Savonius windmill generator kit. Whozit? Glad you asked: this vertical-axis wind turbine generator was perfected in 1922 by Sigurd J. Savonius, the Finn with the Wind. The airfoils (scoops, really) are like two offset vertical halves of a can. The finished windmill model is 7-5/8" tall x 6" square and comes with plastic airfoils, a wooden frame, (4) pre-wound coils, magnets and a bipolar LED so you can see the power being generated. Easy assembly with a screwdriver, pliers and a touch of glue. For ages 8-100, for science fairs, home schooling, or green fun!

This excellent educational kit from Elenco comes with (9) 0.5VDC solar cells pre-wired in sets of (3) and mounted in a 5" x 4" x 7/16" black-plastic frame with screw terminals on the bottom. The kit includes a 1.5VDC motor with leads and a mount, a fan blade and (4) plastic discs from 5/8" dia to 2" dia for mounting on the motor shaft, a 1.5V incandescent bulb with leads, a sound module with leads, and graphic cards to mount on the discs. Comes with a 14-page instruction/experiment booklet, including info on increasing voltage and amperage, powering battery charges, radios, games, etc. Lots of science project potential.
