From the Mindbender series, these lightly varnished wooden critter puzzles are tough to figure out, but they make very attractive tchotchkes when finished. You pick from the 10-piece pig (4-1/2" x 2-1/4" x 2-3/4") or the 9-piece foxy-looking dog (6-1/2" x 4-3/4" x 1-3/8"). If you're puzzle-impaired, each comes with an answer key, but we think you can do without it, if you're persistent enough. For ages 8 and up.

The Advanced Brainstring
We don't have the basic Brainstring® (our brain is too advanced) but this version is like Rubik's Cube® crossed with a naval mine. A 14-sided clear-plastic shape (that's a tetrakaidecahedron, kids) has (8) faces connected to each other by three colored elastic cords with matching pegs on the ends, for a total of (4) sets of (3) cords, with slots to move them. The object is to get all of one color, or (1) of each color, on the faces without throwing it on the floor and smashing it and swearing and stuff.

Deuces, but they're approx. 5-3/4" tall x 3-3/4" wide. For folks with really big paws, or really bad eyes, these oversized playing cards, the standard (52) plus a pair of giant jokers, is the answer to a prayer - and nice decorations for a Las Vegas night, to boot.

Where else could you find Casino Poker Chips with a skull on each side, and the dead-man's hand, aces and eights, displayed across its forehead? These chips are suitable for Wild Bill Hickok impersonators (he was holding this hand when he was ventilated), Deadwood fans, Deadheads, and pirates. Careful examination will reveal that all the cards shown are spades, which is either a sign of surplus or a real reason to get shot. You'll get (3) rolls of (50) chips each, 1-1/2" dia, in red, green or blue (our choice).

You decide when you get a bag of these clear glass marbles. They've all got inner defects-air bubbles, mostly-and some have indented veins on the surface. That just means you're getting a selection of one-of-a-kinds. Most are 3/4" dia, some are a touch larger. (15) marbles per order.

It's nice to know that some things don't change. One is the Jacob's Ladder. Still made with (6) slabs of wood, each about 2" x 2" x 1/2", each a bright combination of colors, and all connected by a contrasting ribbon. Hold one end up and let the string of slabs dangle. When you flop the top block end for end, each lower slab in turn will flop end for end. Fascinating. Particularly if you are about 5 to 9 years old.

Newspaper Sudoku not tough enough for you? You show-off. Try solving the Sudokube®, the evil spawn of a rogue Rubik's Cube® and a wayward Sudoku maiden. You twist away at the 2" x 2" black-and-white plastic cube, until each of the (6) sides displays digits 1 through 9. Extra credit if they're all in the right order with the numbers facing the same way. Only took us 12 minutes, but we used a hacksaw and some epoxy. Packaging says it's "For Ages Over 5." Right.
