The world is your kaleidoscope with a teleidoscope, which is to say that instead of a bunch of little pieces of glass and beads in a rotating case, there's a lens at the other end, in this case a big, clear glass marble making lovely patterns based on whatever you point it at. (Try it on a printed page.) Measures 1" dia x 8-1/4" long. The cardboard tube is covered with diffraction paper for a cool look. Assorted colors

An absolute must-have for space pirates, Deadheads, hypnotists and people who want to stand out in the crowd at large parties. Measures 2-3/4" dia x 1" thick in chrome-ish plastic, and has a black neck cord threaded through a small ring on the top. The red, green and blue LEDs tucked inside with mirrors and a holographic skull can be set for any of (6) flashing, steady or morphing patterns. Includes (3) replaceable button-cell batteries, but it's so lightweight that you could buy (2) and make really sparkly earrings. Groovy.

Through our little black-plastic right-angle viewer. It's a 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" hexagon, and Paul says that if you buy (2) you can see eye-to-eye with yourself, which is a little spooky. Great for a little light spying on the street, and if you find a way to stick it over the lens of a small digital camera, you'll get great candid shots.

It's a good game when the concept lasts through several names, and several generations, and gets even better in the 21st century! Your parents, grandparents, and maybe great-grandparents played a version of the Space Voyagers® Space Travel SpinDoodles. They'd recognize the toothed 2-1/4" dia window and the 6 different perforated gears to create hundreds of symmetrical designs. But they didn't have a small UV LED keyring-sized light, and blue and pink UV-reactive markers. Or a compact, 4-1/2" x 3-3/8" x 7/8" plastic case that opened to store all of that, plus 20 pieces of 3" square paper. Or the (2) button batteries that come with it.

A tough little kaleidoscope, 7" long x 1-3/4" dia, in hard-to-destroy tin, painted red and yellow with Curious George® images on it. The kaleido parts inside are bright, multicolored jewel, crystal and star shapes, not monkeys.

"Not a toy," they say, and they're right. These are disposable, cardboard-frame sunglasses with the all-but-opaque lenses necessary for solar viewing. As we write this, the next solar eclipse is in Brazil-pack these.

Or anything else on your horizon with a very nice kids' Safari® telescope/spotting scope. CJ calls it a toy-that's-not-a-toy, which means that it's a 15X magnification, 35mm dia, 3-draw scope suitable for watching the moon, the fauna if you're in a Safari mood, or the approaching ships if you're in a Master and Commander mood. It's 7-5/8" long when closed, extends to 14" and comes with eyepiece and objective covers. We'll pick one with a red, yellow, green or blue plastic barrel.

Another San Francisco band that didn't make it? Could be, but it's also this clever motorized kaleidoscopic LED toy. Measures 10-1/2" long x 1-9/16" dia. Look inside, hold the power button and watch the light show. Turn the speed dial and watch the lights spin and change like the Fillmore during the Summer of Love. Outside is decorated in a meteor design. Comes with (3) replaceable "AAA" batteries.
