KLEE-klik it says when you push the back of this little metal toy with the picture of a cricket on it. Sounds something like a real cricket, and just like the brass versions that U.S. paratroopers carried on D-Day for communicating in the hedgerows around Ste. Mare Eglise. Also just like the one Sister Mary Inviolata used to coordinate precision kneeling/standing exercises during our Confirmation practice, which was only slightly more organized than D-Day. You will get (6) cricket clickers for $2.95.

It could have been called an Alabama Buzzer after Alabama Vest, the man who invented it. Or a Clegghorn, after Thaddeus Von Clegg, the clock master who fabricated the first one. But the hand-crafted 4-3/4" long steel instrument was a simple amusement, and the 1840s were a simple time. So it's simply a kazoo.

From the Mindbender series, these lightly varnished wooden critter puzzles are tough to figure out, but they make very attractive tchotchkes when finished. You pick from the 10-piece pig (4-1/2" x 2-1/4" x 2-3/4") or the 9-piece foxy-looking dog (6-1/2" x 4-3/4" x 1-3/8"). If you're puzzle-impaired, each comes with an answer key, but we think you can do without it, if you're persistent enough. For ages 8 and up.

It lights up, it flies, and it makes a satisfying bang when it lands. Doesn't create a new universe but you can't have everything for 20 bucks. The Big Bang Rocket is 15-1/4" long with 6" fins and an 18" tail. The 6" x 3/4" dia tube in the middle has 4-color internal flashing LEDs (powered by (3) "AAA" batteries, included). You fling it in the air by the tail, but first put a small piece of any paper (newsprint will do) in the rubber nose-cone and it will make a loud cap-gun-ish bang when it hits. Even if it hits grass, or sand. LEDs run for 60 seconds so you can find it during night landings.

America has been on the edge of its collective office chair waiting for the first combination mini-aquarium and desktop organizer/calendar/clock. Be the first in your office to own this 1-1/2 quart tank with a USB-powered water pump, filtration system, gooseneck light and backlit LCD clock/alarm with snooze/calendar/ thermometer/pencil cup. Also emits soothing nature sounds. But wait, there's more: also has color-morphing LEDs that shine through the water. Includes a fake plant and tiny river rocks. Measures 9-1/4" x 3-3/4" x 5-5/8" tall. You add (3) "AA" batteries and the fish. Lunchtime sushi doesn't get any fresher than this.

Put this "Magic Sand" in water and it won't get wet. Which is weird, but true, like so much you read in this catalog. Originally developed to trap oil spills, this stuff lets you build sand castles under water. When you pour off the water, the sand is dry. Each colorful dispenser bottle holds approx 50 ml. We'll pick a pair from assorted colors, like orange, purple and hot pink.

You get a pair of these "Rattlebacks," 3-3/4" long translucent acrylic half-ovals (like the bottom half of a submarine) that refuse to turn clockwise. Place them rounded-side-down, spin them clockwise and watch them rattle to a stop and reverse direction. The scientific explanation is that their mother, Mrs. Acrylic, was once frightened nearly to death by a cuckoo clock in the Black Forest.

The Advanced Brainstring
We don't have the basic Brainstring® (our brain is too advanced) but this version is like Rubik's Cube® crossed with a naval mine. A 14-sided clear-plastic shape (that's a tetrakaidecahedron, kids) has (8) faces connected to each other by three colored elastic cords with matching pegs on the ends, for a total of (4) sets of (3) cords, with slots to move them. The object is to get all of one color, or (1) of each color, on the faces without throwing it on the floor and smashing it and swearing and stuff.

Roll these big bones. Perfect for shooting dice with no danger of losing them under the fridge, but also nice teaching aids. You get a dozen 2-1/2" dense-foam dice, (4) each in green, orange and blue. They also make a clean, contemporary alternative to fuzzy dice for the rear-view mirror.
