Number games are for geeks; the real fun is in word play. The Read Spin™ game is a set of (8) decagonal sprockets (that’s 10-sided if you’re innumerate) with a letter embossed on each face. Internal magnets abetted by a plastic peg hold the sprockets (read “wheels”) together, but you can spin them to make words, then switch their order and start again. The Read Spin is 3/4” dia x 2-1/8” long, has (2) full alphabets plus extras, comes on a small key ring, has directions for (6) games, and makes those long waits interesting. Great travel game.

The biggest improvement ever in flying screaming monkey technology. This 8-inch primate launches slingshot-style just like his slightly larger cousin and screams just as monkishly, but instead of landing with a sickening thud, he floats gently to earth in his own 20" dia parachute. A must-have for Screaming Monkey fans.

Very Mad Men-ish, these fuzzy stick-on mustaches, with models on the package so you can see exactly how you'd have looked in 1963. You pick from (7) men's or (7) women's 'staches. The men's include the Hollywood, Hero, Bruiser and Weasel in black, the Square and Sheriff in brown, and the gray, handlebar Grampa. Women's are, of course, all pink, and include the Bollywood, Heroine, Manly Missus, Frida, Lip Liner, Cowgirl and the Grandma. Great disguises. Great costumes.

Time was, these service bells were on every teacher's desk and the front desk of every hotel in the world. They're still a classically beautiful design, and they'll still bring folks running when you tap the little plunger on top. The chrome bell sits on a black enameled steel base and the whole thing is 2-3/4" dia x 1-7/8" tall.

Play poker like a pirate with these buccaneer playing cards, the traditional suits replaced by skull & crossbones, doubloons, galleons and parrots. Standard 3-1/2" x 2-1/4" size, with the backs featuring another skull over crossed swords. Note also that pirate playing cards have elevens instead of jacks. Why? You'll have to ask a pirate.

From France comes this fun mechanical plastic bird that really flies by flapping its wings. It is about 8" long and has a wingspan of 16" tip to tip. Snap the wings in place, wind up the rubberband drive and toss it gently into the air on its maiden flight. It flies up to fifty yards with a satisfying fluttering sound. Comes with a spare rubberband drive mechanism.

It could have been called an Alabama Buzzer after Alabama Vest, the man who invented it. Or a Clegghorn, after Thaddeus Von Clegg, the clock master who fabricated the first one. But the hand-crafted 4-3/4" long steel instrument was a simple amusement, and the 1840s were a simple time. So it's simply a kazoo.

Finish it off with das periscope. Perfect for a blue-plastic submarine, our blue-plastic periscope will let you see the destroyers following your bubbles, or, if you're stuck on land, let you look around corners. Our visual aid is 1-3/8" dia, telescopes from 14" long to 10", has a clutch to secure the length and a 1" dia port to look through. Handy for reverse snorkeling, too. (Just think about it, OK?)

Frankly, we're bored with the Community Chest and we've never liked Ventnor Avenue. For a nice change of pace try one of these non-monotonous Monopoly games, licensed from the folks who own the original. You pick Dinosaur Monopoly, where you take a chance on your excavation collapsing but where the rent on a pteranodon is just $8 a month, or the Night Sky Monopoly where Earth is, surprisingly, the new Park Place and where it can cost you an astronomical $100 if you leave your telescope out in the rain. Tokens are appropriate to each game, but you still pass go and you can still go to jail. Two to six players, ages 8 to adult.

The manufacturer calls it the Thunder Tube". We call it indispensable for the amateur Foley operator. It's a 7" long x 2-1/2" dia PVC tube with a resonant head at one end attached to a 17" long x 3/16" dia extension spring. Shake it, scrape it, wiggle it, use your palm to muffle it and you generate creaks, deep warbles, rumbles, weird heterodyne-ish gong effects, wa-wa's, rude noises, and, yes, realistic thunder. A perfect musical companion to your cuica and rain stick--and good, clean fun around the house. Don't make a sound-track without it.
