The $10 Chain Saw
No gas or electricity needed for this pocket-sized manual chain saw, the camper's pal. It's 30" long overall, with (82) spring-steel teeth on the 18-1/2" middle section, and canvas loop handles on each end. Imagine a cross between a sharpened bike chain and a garotte. It's easy to use (we tested it), works a whole lot faster than a hatchet, rolls up into no space at all, and stores in the heavy-duty canvas belt pouch that comes with it.

Old Codger's Carving Set
Not an old codger? Get an early start. This was made for sitting on the porch, carving family heirlooms after supper. The pressboard case holds a 6-piece wood carving set with (3) small straight gouges, (1) straight chisel, (1) V-gouge and (1) skew chisel. All are approx 5" long, with wooden handles. Be even better if you used them while an old dog was asleep at your feet, but we don't sell old dogs.

Skinny But Strong Like Bull
Our thinner picker-upper, but with a powerful 5-lb-pull, 9/16" dia magnet on the business end (for spilled nails, the screw that rolled under the stove, or the heavy wrench you dropped into the sump). Tightly bound, too, so it will keep the shape you use it to mimic. Measures 6" long, with approx (32) 3-1/8" pins per inch. Press them into a contour and they'll hold the shape for transferring to tile, duplicating moldings, etc. Includes an adapter plate so if you buy two gauges you can lock them together for corner angles.

But we don't, as they say in Brooklyn, mean that in no bad way. This very finely made swivel-handle pin vise is a boon for jewelers, crafters, fly-tiers, and model makers. Knurled brass with a rubber head and barrel, it measures 4-1/8" long, with a pair of 1-9/16" long double-headed collets, (1) with 3mm and 0.5 mm IDs and (1) with 2mm and 0. 5mm IDs. The spare collet stores in the barrel.

Finger-Tip Saw
This Stansport product is called the Finger-Tip Saw (although all you really need to cut off fingertips is a good garden pruner). This is actually a survival/hunter's wire saw, a 20" long, thin and sharp serrated wire with a 1-1/8" slip-ring at each end (for your fingertips). Coil it up and you can store it in a shirt pocket. Cuts "wood, plastic, bone, etc." and includes instructions for making a one-handed saw with a short tree branch.

On a stick. This 6-draw telescoping tool has a 1" steel alligator clip on the business end. Extends from 6-3/8" (with a pocket clip) to 25" long. Use it to light pilot lights and over-primed grills, to hold a magnet and grab lost screws, to fish wires, or to deliver stuff to the guy in the next cell. Unscrew the gator and it's a simple pointer, or you can put anything else with a 5/32"-36 thread on the end.
