Build your own working four-stroke engine! In this simplified, battery-driven version of Nikolaus Otto's 1867 four-stroke engine, the pistons and crankshaft move, the fan blade spins, and the spark plugs light up to simulate timing. This Smithsonian kit, with over (100) plastic pieces, includes a small DC motor to run the engine, and an excellent 40pp instruction manual. You provide (2) "AA" batteries and an interested person eight years of age or older.

Water Rockets!!

A great toy that demonstrates the basics of rocketry. A plastic rocket is partially filled with water, air is pumped in with a little hand pump, and upon the release, the air pressure pushes the water out the back, propelling the rocket. About 1-1/2" dia x 6" long. Flight tests suggest loft and distances of about 50 feet each are achievable, when the right water/air mix is found. However, since operations lost their rocket on the roof, testing was terminated before final results could be obtained. Clearly, these are good fun for all ages. It has everything you need... Just add water!!

Large Rock Polishing Kit
Budding lapidarians will lap up this rock polishing kit which is so complete it even contains some rocks. The polishing tumbler has a (3) lb. ((1) qt.) fifteen sided rubber barrel and is driven by a 115 VAC motor. Overall dimensions are 6" x 6" x 7-1/2" high. In addition to the tumbler, the kit includes an assortment of jewelry findings and a detailed manual giving you easy to follow instructions. But don't think of it only as useful for jewelry making. Build a real head of live steam in the boiler, ease the throttle open and watch the engine take off. The stationary steam plants have nickel plated brass horizontal boiler, water gauge, whistle, safety valve, throttle, 3" dia flywheel and power takeoff pulley. Our dry pellet fuel model (includes 20 fuel pellets) has a single action horizontal piston engine and comes as a kit. It requires about 2 hours to assemble and mount on its roughly 7" sq base, using simple tools like pliers and screwdriver. Assembly adds to the fun and cuts the price! All parts of each are precision metal, plated or enameled as appropriate. Select a small DC motor that will operate as a generator from our catalogs and see if you can become a 19th century electric utility!! Requires light assembly. Ages 10 and up. There is no way to tell from the outside if they have crystal centers, but we will send you two just to raise your odds, and we haven't had a dud yet in our stores!! We think Whitewings are the best gliders in the air, and these multi-craft kits combine the best of the best. The "Early Gliders" is their Milestones set of (6) historic flying machines: the Wright Flyer; the 1893 Lilienthal glider; the Bleriot X1; the Ryan NYP (Spirit of St. Louis); the Lockheed Vega; and the Douglas DC-3. The "Modern Gliders" comprises the Messerschmitt ME 262, the Bell X-1, the Boeing 367-80, the Air Force North American X-15, the Hawker Siddeley XV-6A Kestrel, and the Rutan Voyager. All are based on the real things that are on display at the Smithsonian. These are approx 10" long with a 12" wingspan, made in card stock and balsa, with a rubber-band launcher and a good 40pp manual.
