Lay Siege To The Doghouse!
Right after you build your own working medieval catapult or trebuchet. All you'll need is glue, scissors and a steady hand (plus a small bag of marbles or rocks or something as a counterweight for the trebuchet) to construct these wooden, Canadian-made siege engine kits. The catapult stands 6" tall x 5" wide x 10" long and will toss assorted stuff 15 feet or farther, depending upon the stuff. The finished trebuchet will be 26" long x 18" wide x 24" tall and will propel small objects (meatballs?) 20 feet or more. Both include detailed instructions. Note: Please don't propel small mammals, and please don't put anyone's eye out.

Building Blocks
Rigid plastic cubes, 1 cm on a side. The little ones are matriarchal, having three female surfaces and one male. They are a jumble of different colors in an assortment. Join blocks of the same size to build strings, ganglia, networks, or structures. Be careful with them though as they could too easily be lodged in the mouth of a young child! Great item for kids of the right age with proper supervision.

Electronics! Mechanics!
We’re not supposed to play favorites, but we like these kits that combine the look of bare–bones wooden bodies with the action of electronics –– and we really like the Robomech with his rhythmic walk, moving arms and glowing red eyes. Although the balanced movement of the big–footed Tyrannomech dinosaur is fascinating. And Trainmech, the old–fashioned locomotive, is a textbook example of the workings of shafts and wheels. The robots are about 8–1/2” tall. The mechanized kits come with motors, gears, gearboxes, switches, etc., and pre–punched 1/8” thick plywood body parts (you know we always like body parts). You supply simple tools and (2) to (4) “AA” batteries. No soldering required, but they’re relatively complicated. For 12 and up –– or 8 and up, with adult help.
