Or maybe not. Hotel managers get funny about rocket launches, but this is NASA-level fun for the backyard, or maybe a cheap motel parking lot. The Stomp Rocket™ uses no batteries, fuel, diet cola or anything else but your feet. And good stomp on the 4" X 8" "Blast Pad" can get you 200 feet of lift at speeds up to 100mph. You get (4) bright yellow plastic rockets, 9" long x 7/8" dia, with soft, round nose cones (bulbs?) for safety's sake, and a tripod gantry. Fine adjustments even allow for accuracy contests. If the neighbors have really high roofs, or you manage to achieve orbit, we've got a (2) pack of replacement rockets.

Incendiary rocket fuel? We don't need no stinkin' incendiary rocket fuel. We got the Mighty Seltzer Rocket! The seltzer rocket, made of simple plastic parts. (No, don't lean over it!. That's not a foam nose cone, you know!) The 4-1/4" x 1-1/4" dia seltzer rocket that holds water and (1) dissolving seltzer tablet. The rocket that has shot almost 30 feet in the air for us. It comes with (4) antacid tablets, just like those you can buy at the drug store -- and it's basic science at its best!

We think Whitewings are the best gliders in the air, and these multi-craft kits combine the best of the best. The "Early Gliders" is their Milestones set of (6) historic flying machines: the Wright Flyer; the 1893 Lilienthal glider; the Bleriot X1; the Ryan NYP (Spirit of St. Louis); the Lockheed Vega; and the Douglas DC-3. The "Modern Gliders" comprises the Messerschmitt ME 262, the Bell X-1, the Boeing 367-80, the Air Force North American X-15, the Hawker Siddeley XV-6A Kestrel, and the Rutan Voyager. All are based on the real things that are on display at the Smithsonian. These are approx 10" long with a 12" wingspan, made in card stock and balsa, with a rubber-band launcher and a good 40pp manual.

From Kustom Metal", this is a very nice erect-a-set-like kit with steel structural members plus rubber treads or a few plastic parts like wheels and accessories. We'll choose a clever Bulldozer, Excavator, Crane or Harvester, or a cool little Dragster or Racer, for you. The finished vehicle will be 5" or 6" long and proportionately high. Kits have between 130-190 pieces and include a small box wrench and screwdriver along with good instructions, although younger or impatient kiddles might need some help. Clever kids could also find other things to construct from the parts. Small parts and pieces, so keep it away from kids three and under.

And by golly, a lot of fun. You'll need some space, or course, but this oversized, convertible land-sailor/ice-sailor is a small version of what crazy people sail when they can't get near the water. Good for learning (or teaching) sailing principles, too. Measures 21" long with an 18" wheel span and a 22" tall mast. Wind-powered, but with a remote control for the steering and sail trim. Big, 2-5/8" dia rear wheels and a single front "anti-flip" wheel (all rubber-tired) have slip-on ice skates for your winter amusement. Slow down and order a model-ship kit of the USS Constitution, aka Old Ironsides, the frigate (now moored in Charlestown, MA) that won the War of 1812. This smallish, but nicely detailed and reasonably complex wooden kit, is made for ages 10 and up-which means complicated enough to be fun to build but simple enough not to make you scream AAAAAARGHH and quit. It's approx 8-1/2" long x 9" tall when assembled, with rigging. Comes with good directions. You add the glue and paint or varnish and it's ready for the mantel.

Our PC-9 rubber-band powered styro airplane boasts a big, long rubber power plant, plastic prop, and landing gear. Measures 15" nose to tail with an 18" wingspan. Takes some light assembly but, the directions say, "when you play this plane very proficiently, you will find that it can be made more wonderful flying ways." Indeed. Rated for 200 feet of flight (80% longer than the Wright brother's first flight!), but we'd avoid really windy days for the best proficiently flying.
