Build-A-Dozer Kit

From Kustom Metal", this is a very nice erect-a-set-like kit with steel structural members plus rubber treads or a few plastic parts like wheels and accessories. We'll choose a clever Bulldozer, Excavator, Crane or Harvester, or a cool little Dragster or Racer, for you. The finished vehicle will be 5" or 6" long and proportionately high. Kits have between 130-190 pieces and include a small box wrench and screwdriver along with good instructions, although younger or impatient kiddles might need some help. Clever kids could also find other things to construct from the parts. Small parts and pieces, so keep it away from kids three and under.

Your New Hydrogen Ride

OK, you can't ride in it, but your gerbil can. From the excellent Thames and Kosmos® company, now comes this Fuel Cell Hydrogen Powered Car. You add (2) "AA" batteries to aid the electrolytic process, but after assembly and the right priming, the hydrogen cell will power this 8" x 5" open-frame vehicle. For ages 10 and up, the kit includes a detailed 16pp instruction booklet. Good for physics instruction and good for science projects. "Today the gerbil, tomorrow the whole family!"

Seltzer Power!

Incendiary rocket fuel? We don't need no stinkin' incendiary rocket fuel. We got the Mighty Seltzer Rocket! The seltzer rocket, made of simple plastic parts. (No, don't lean over it!. That's not a foam nose cone, you know!) The 4-1/4" x 1-1/4" dia seltzer rocket that holds water and (1) dissolving seltzer tablet. The rocket that has shot almost 30 feet in the air for us. It comes with (4) antacid tablets, just like those you can buy at the drug store -- and it's basic science at its best!

Try this kit if your school's sponsoring a Mousetrap Derby, or if you're looking for a fun adult/child project. (No, not a father/son project. Do you think we're chauvinistic louts who are still living in the 1950s?) The kit includes all the balsa wood, rubber treads and other parts and pieces you'll need for a 9" racing car, including the mousetrap to power it. It needs to be sanded, assembled, glued and painted - and it needs an adult. Someone has to set the mousetrap.

Very Proficiently Flying

Our PC-9 rubber-band powered styro airplane boasts a big, long rubber power plant, plastic prop, and landing gear. Measures 15" nose to tail with an 18" wingspan. Takes some light assembly but, the directions say, "when you play this plane very proficiently, you will find that it can be made more wonderful flying ways." Indeed. Rated for 200 feet of flight (80% longer than the Wright brother's first flight!), but we'd avoid really windy days for the best proficiently flying.

Shaker-esque Paddle Boat

'Tis a gift to be simple, they said, and this little wooden paddle boat is one of the original simple toys. What do you get when you take several slabs of a firm foam in vivid colors, die-cut them so that hundreds of strangely shaped pieces can be punched from them, and pack them with a page of methodical, if unbelievably detailed, directions? You get a meticulously constructed vehicle, somewhere between a toy and a soft sculpture, that required no glue or paint. You get a primarily red and black fire engine with a 9" long frame, or a power shovel of mostly primary colors with 7-1/2" treads. You also get a great project for long solitary evenings -- or a LOT of adult/child bonding. Special kits for very special people.

Scaled-Down Ragtops

These 1:43 scale die-cast and painted metal cars are all convertibles, 3–7/8” to 4–3/8” long, with detailed plastic dashboards and upholstery, and a small display mount under each one. The ’66 Olds 4–4–2 is blue with a red and white interior. The ’38 Alpha Romeo 8C 2900 and the ’55 Pontiac Starchief are both yellow and black. No display stand, but a great paint job and a working tailgate and doors.
