Six, count 'em, six different small science kits that are educational, easy to assemble, and fun for scientific beginners. You get a motorized robotic bird with an 8" wingspan, a 9" skeleton model, a 20X microscope with blank slides, a balloon-powered car, an electrical maze that teaches conductivity, and a 2" tall baking-soda volcano. Instructions included, but you'll need to add (2) "AA" batteries to a couple of these kits. We think Aristotle's parents must have started him off with something like this. From Science Time".

You can't start 'em too young in the competitive robotics games, we always say. This kit requires no soldering, but the result is a honey of an 8-legged lunar rover, sort of a wireless remote-control arachnid. Includes a pre-wired circuit board for the infrared remote and wiring harnesses for the motors and batteries. The case is translucent red and yellow plastic and the whole robotic shebang will measure 6" x 6" x 5" when finished. Has (8) 4-part articulated legs, and (4) switchable channels, so you can operate your bot with (3) others on the same surface. Includes a good 13pp manual, requires minimal tools for assembly and a total of (4) "AA" and (4) "AAA" batteries, which you supply. The manufacturer doesn't list an appropriate age (other than warning that 3-year-olds can eat the parts) but we think any crafty 9- to 99-year-old could handle the task.

And teach a kid (8 and up) the basics of solar power. This excellent educational kit comes with (9) 0.5VDC solar cells pre-wired in sets of (3) and mounted in a 5" x 4" x 7/16" black-plastic frame with screw terminals on the bottom. The kit includes a 1.5VDC motor with leads and a mount, a fan blade and (4) plastic discs from 5/8" dia to 2" dia for mounting on the motor shaft, a 1.5V incandescent bulb with leads, a sound module with leads, and graphic cards to mount on the discs. Comes with a 14-page instruction/experiment booklet, including info on increasing voltage and amperage, powering battery charges, radios, games, etc. Lots of science project potential. "Heuristic as all get-out," Jarvis said when he saw it.

For archeologically minded numismatists, now comes the "Dirty Old Coins" kit, complete with (5) genuine, hand-struck ancient coins from 1,500 to over 2,000 years old, all with their own authentic dirt and ancient schmutz still attached. All "Made in the Roman Empire. Assembled in the U.S.A." You get a 12pp instruction booklet, a PC or Mac-compatible CD-ROM coin image database for identification, a stiff brush, double-lens magnifier, and cleaning and de-corrosion fluids. Most coins will be worth a few dollars, the supplier says, but some rare finds could be worth "hundreds or even thousands." Plenty of fun either way.

A trio of the best science education kits we have seen dealing with electricity, magnetism, motors and generators. The 44 page instruction booklets are educational and complete; state problem, approach and explain what is happening for a series of projects of graded difficulty. The Motor/Generator kit includes several introductory experiments on magnetism as well as six complete motor generator projects. The Electromagnet kit provides experiments including the building of an electromagnet, a doorbell chime, a telegraph, a relay and an electric catapult. The Levitation Set experiments with magnetic fields, gravity, and equilibrium; plus everything you need to build a magnetic levitation train! All are complete except for batteries. Strongly recommended for their quality, the accuracy of their science and the interest they will sustain. Ages 10-18.

Well, a pair, but that's a lot in the tank biz. This very cool kit has translucent green plastic frames, pre-wired circuit boards and motor harnesses, and the result, despite the kit's misleading Titan Tank name, is TWO 5" square x 3" tall wireless remote-control tanks (with separate controllers) that fire invisible infrared bullets at each other, and reverse direction when hit. Plus, they light up and make tank noises. Each controller has (4) channels, so if you buy (2) sets of (2), everybody can play. Each tank will take (8) "AA" batteries that you'll supply, but remember that they light up and shoot rays and make noise and move around, so you're getting a lot of bang for your battery. Includes a 15pp manual and circuit boards that are already assembled, so anyone with a steady hand from, say, a nine-year-old to a WWII tank commander, should be able to assemble them.
