Bridges To Burn
Or break, actually, as an heuristic exercise. Here's a classroom-full of bridge-building supplies based on the Illinois Institute of Technology's national bridge-building contest. Each kit contains enough balsa wood pieces and glue to supply (24) budding engineers or physics students with what it takes to test their skills at wooden bridge construction. Includes a 12pp teacher's guide with info about (6) bridge styles and (8) types of trusses, (24) rules/instruction sheets for students, (360) pieces of 1/8" square x 24" long wood, and (24) bottles of white glue. Among the most engaging and popular classroom projects in the country, it's designed for grades 7-12.

Teach the children how the wind can create electricity with this Savonius windmill generator kit. Whozit? Glad you asked: this vertical-axis wind turbine generator was perfected in 1922 by Sigurd J. Savonius, the Finn with the Wind. The airfoils (scoops, really) are like two offset vertical halves of a can. The finished windmill model is 7-5/8" tall x 6" square and comes with plastic airfoils, a wooden frame, (4) pre-wound coils, magnets and a bipolar LED so you can see the power being generated. Easy assembly with a screwdriver, pliers and a touch of glue. For ages 8-100, for science fairs, home schooling, or green fun!

They made this big mouth for dental schools, but we think it would make a lovely addition to any decorating scheme. Measures 6-1/2" wide x 3-7/8" tall x 5-3/8" deep, with steel hinges. In addition to a full set of chompers, it has a giant (but soft) pink tongue. Comes with an 8-1/2" long toothbrush for instructional purposes, we suppose, or maybe just to keep it clean, and an 8-1/2" x 11" chart of the upper and lower jaws.
