We haven't had this much excitement around here since the first shipment of burp guns arrived! The Solarscope is here, and everyone's lined up to look into it! This solar viewing device lets you indirectly watch sun spots, solar eclipses, even clouds drifting across your line of sight. Using it, you can determine the changing times of solar noon, the sun's rotation rate, the earth's pole axis inclination, your latitude and more. The adjustable corrugated-cardboard framework holds a first-surface mirror, and a Cx lens in an 8-1/2" long tube, which reflect the sun on a white panel of the frame. On sunny days, it can be used outside, or inside through a window that faces south (or north, if you drag it down to Argentina or Australia). Simple to assemble, and to disassemble for storage between solar viewings. It's 14-1/2" x 16-1/4" x 24" high OA, and comes with a 38-page teacher's guide. It's made and sold in France by Light Tec Optical Instruments, and we're one of the few Solarscope sources in this country.

It came from either outer space, or a projection TV. Our largest Fresnel lens measures 49-1/8" x 37-1/8" x 1/16" thick, with a 42" focal length. Build your own lighthouse or projection TV, teach optical properties to students, or just turn your 21-inch model into one with a tavern-size picture. Held in the sun, the lens will concentrate rays enough to cook eggs or torch lumber. And, under adult supervision in the parking lot, employees of a certain un-named scientific and surplus purveyor actually melted pennies in seconds. Extremely cool and done strictly, we assure you, to determine the lens's focal length. Do not, we shouldn't have to remind you, store this puppy in direct sunlight. Or let the underage or under-mature sneak it into the sunlight.

34407 POCKET MICROSCOPE |
Microscope glassware for examination of blood, pond water, mold, and other minutiae. All of the microscope slides are optically clear glass 26mm x 76mm (about 1" x 3"), between 1mm and 1.2mm thick. The well slides, of course, have a concave well to hold a drop of liquid. Our each is a package of (12) well slides, or a box of (72) standard slides with ground edges. Cover glasses are the smaller and very thin pieces of glass used as the top of the glass slide sandwich. They are often used temporarily by simply dropping them onto a drop of liquid to flatten and spread it and to minimize evaporation. More confident microscopists will cement them in place to permanently preserve a specimen. Our each is a package of (100) cover glasses 18 mm square, #1 thickness (0.13mm to 0.17mm). If you need one, you need both.

Optical grade prism from Uncle's WWII tank periscopes. This one is 2-1/8" on the hypotenuse, 5-3/4" long, and 1-1/2" on the leg. They may have small non-interfering chips or surface scratches. These military tank prisms will be gone one day soon. That will be sad. In the meantime, get the unsilvered version, they make great rainbows.

It's made for holding a microscope, but it's a fine large carrying/storage case with endless possibilities. In navy nylon with grey straps, it's 18" tall x 11-1/2" wide x 8" deep with (4) small feet on the bottom so it stands upright. The straps extend beyond the top to serve as handles. The whole case is foam-padded, with a couple of hook-and-loop straps for securing whatever is inside, (2) elastic pockets in the lid for accessories, and a zip closure around (3) sides. Fits most microscopes, but would hold any number of things, from electronics to dinner-to-go for six, and would be a very nice way to organize assorted stuff in the trunk or back of an SUV.
