Square Deal

"Timmy, son, take a look at my beautiful new magnifier - nice and hefty, 3-1/8" square glass that blows stuff up to 2X, and best of all, it's got bright white LEDs at all four corners. And a purty 5" long colored-plastic handle that bends up to 20 degrees so your old gramps doesn't have to." "But, Grampa, I thought magnifying glasses were always round." "Well, most of them are, Timmy, but not all of them. Not if you know where to shop. This one's got corners, because those newspaper stories that Grampa can't see are rectangular, not round. It just makes sense. Here, you push this button and watch it light up these obits and Grampa'll read 'em to you." Requires (2) AA batteries not included.

40+ And Failing?

40+ And Failing?

You can switch reading glasses on and off all day and keep track of them, or you can try this 21st–century answer to the pince–nez. The acrylic lenses are 1–1/16” dia and the glasses are 3–1/2” across. The lightweight, clear frames have a small handle in the lower right corner. You just hold them up to your eyes for the few seconds it takes to read what you need. They’re always at the ready, since you can use the tiny hole in the handle to attach them to your collar and let them dangle –– or because at this price, you can leave them in strategic places all over the house!

Dichroic Filters

Dichroic Filters

Dichroic filters separate light by selective transmission and reflection depended on the wavelength. These examples are 69 x 97 mm (about 2-11/16" x 3-7/8") x about 1.8 mm thick. The "yellow" filter TRANSMITS yellow, and reflects all other colors. (Reflections therefore have a violet hue.) Good for lab demonstrations or projects, possibly for photography too.

Protected Lenses

Closed, this 3-1/2" dia x 11/16" thick black- and maroon-plastic disc is a traditional yin/yang design. We don't know that it will produce "all that comes to be," but open, it can let you take a closer look at what's already here. The black section rotates, and within it, (4) magnifying lenses rotate. Double lenses provide (8) views, from 5x to 12x magnification. Not a very large field, but a good design to if it's going to be tossed into her purse/his pocket.

Placebo Lens

Placebo Lens

Please don't pop these little glass DCX beauties in your mouth. Sure, they're shaped like zinc tablets or miniature communion wafers - thin, 14mm dia - but they'll do you no good inside; probably even cause you harm. Instead, utilize their 48.3mm focal lengths for all classroom projects, or combine these with other lenses to build binoculars, magnifiers, microscopes and telescopes.

Be(prism)am

Be(prism)am

Nice little cubic beamsplitter prism. (Get it?) 12 x 11 x 10mm, it's painted black on (3) sides. Low transmission-about 70/30 or 80/20-but it'll be fine for classroom demos, experimentation, or perhaps souping up your fancy laser device.

Combo-Scope

The manufacturer of this great little device, C&A Scientific Company Inc., calls this a Spy Scope, but we think its multiple optical applications in one very small package are the story here. The very cool 8 X 20 spotting scope has an adjustable focal length graduated from 25cm to infinity. It measures a mere 4-7/8" long when extended, with a rubber grip and eyepiece cover and wrist strap. And it comes with a 3-1/4" tall 5X loupe that's threaded to mate with the scope to create a 25X microscope. The plastic microscope stand/extender is also threaded and will come apart from the loupe. Comes with a black nylon belt pouch for the spotting scope. Can you say "multi-task?"

Prince Plastic

Prince Plastic

Sure, when it comes to optical precision, glass is king. But in other categories (price!), plastic is definitely heir to the throne. If you're not looking for precision, but just for some funky lenses for your art project, model or for messing around with light, these 20mm dia PCV lenses will work royally. 6.6mm thick, clear plastic with a -60mm focal length. With (2) 1/8" dia mounting nubs on the side; they should file right off if you don't like them. So let the bluebloods waste their bread on glass; you've got plastic.

Big Sherlockian Glass

A magnifier so big it made us wish there were someone around here with a clue. The 5" dia lens says 2.5X but is more like 1.5X. It's just over 10" long OA, in a sturdy plastic frame with a contoured rubber grip, an acrylic lens, and a mysteriously low price.
