Boring Cards

Boring Cards

Rarely have we seen such boring teaching aids. Aides yes, but not aids. 4" Sq. cards. The red ones have lines dividing them into 10ths, with from one to nine of the lined off bars shaded. The green ones have lines in both directions, hence are divided into 100ths. From 5 to 95 of the resulting squares are shaded, always in multiples of 5. On the yellow, the 100 squares of the green cards are each sub divided into 10 giving 1000 (yawn) parts to the whole. From 25 to 975 parts are shaded, in multiples of 25. (Snzz) If this how to teach decimals, its no wonder the kids don't learn. Turn the cards over and use the blank sides for craft projects. You get a total of (76) cards, two of each possible red, one of each possible green and yellow. The above should allow you to compute how many of each color you get.

Raising Kids

Occasionally we in the surplus business end up with something slightly outside our usual pro-vender. These two audio kits with advice on raising kids are cases in point. Each has (4) cassettes and a "work book". Each is by learned experts in the field: Lendon Smith, M.D. and Dr. Curt Shreiner for the age 1-6 guide: Straight Talk on Raising Young Children; Drs. Douglas Powell and Curt Shreiner for the older age guide: Straight Talk on Raising Kids. Try using the tapes while you drive to and from work and hitting the work book after the kids are tucked up. The advice seems pretty straight forward. The problem as originally offered was the price: a whopping $49.95/each!!

All Humidity Is Relative

Is that a rubber chicken you're swinging above your head? No, it's a sling psychrometer from Sper Scientific! You're not exorcising that science class, you're teaching them basic concepts and elemental weather measurement! You've filled the small reservoir that wets the wick attached to one of the two thermometers in the plastic 9" x 2" x 5/8" device. You've spun it above your head by its fold-out handle like a New Year's Eve noisemaker. You've calculated the difference in temperature between the two thermometers and consulted the enclosed chart to determine the relative humidity. Three times. Now you can tuck it back in its slim canvas shoulder pouch, acknowledge their wide-eyed admiration, and start telling them about burying that string under the light of a full moon....
