You can start with our single aluminum tuning fork, 2-tined and 7-1/2" long. It vibrates at 256 hz, and is labeled "C". Or you can order the set that has (8) forks and a mallet with a rubber-tipped plastic head. The forks are labeled low-C to high-C and come in a fitted, latched wooden box. Unfortunately, C.J., who has perfect pitch, tells us that his pitch is more perfect than most of the tuning forks. He also says you can file the tips, tuning them to an electronic keyboard until they're perfect - and we think there's a certain cachet to telling people you tuned the forks yourself. But they are perfect, if you're using them for things like teaching principles of sound or driving the chihuahua crazy.

The Adjustable Journal
These black or light brown, padded-cover refillable journals are Staples® Rolla™ brand, with "the convenience of a notebook, the versatility of a binder," by which they mean they're bound with small solid rings, so they open flat and stay flat, but the ruled sheets can be slipped out and reinserted elsewhere in the book. You pick the small, 8" x 5-1/2" journal or the large, 8-1/2" x 11" one. They all have 70 pages, ruled on both sides and with a blank heading/date space on each side, plus a small ruler, business card holder, pen strap and two dividers, one with a pocket.

Big Yellow Thermometer
The numbers are 3/8" tall on this yellow 15" tall x 3" wide alcohol thermometer designed for the classroom. Reads -40° to 50°C and -40° to 120°F in red, and is in a plastic housing with (3) keyed mounting slots. Bulb is behind a plastic grid to keep little fingers from making it 98° in the room. Titled "The Field and Forest Handy Book," this volume has been justifiably in print since 1906. Written by Daniel C. "Uncle Dan" Beard, the founder of the Sons of Daniel Boone and one of the founders of the BSA, it's a compendium of eternally relevant woodland lore, from building cabins, sleds, boats, and bridges to camping in swamps. The only part we skipped was on how to cook a muskrat. (We know a place that delivers.) Loaded with illustrations. In soft cover from David Godine's Nonpareil Books, 428 pages.
