Un-Bunsen Burner
So you don't have a gas jet in the garage? You don't think Margie and Ted are old enough to handle the high temperatures of a Bunsen burner? Our alcohol lamps are the answer. They burn alcohol (available at the hardware store), and are hot enough to boil water, to soften glass tubing for bending, and to generate the chemical reactions generally called for in science projects. Lamp (B) is 3-1/8” tall x 2-11/16” square glass with a wick assembly that brings the whole to a height of 4-1/2".

Get With It!
Transform your biological microscope into a digital microscope and transmit live, full-color video images to your computer. This Premiere MA88 digital camera has a 640 x 480 pixel eyepiece, and comes with an adapter so it can be used with either a 23mm or 30mm barrel microscope. Its 6-ft lead terminates in a USB jack. Use the software CD-ROM that comes with it with Windows 95, 98, 2000 and XP.

Probe Something Hot
With a good-quality digital probe thermometer from Sper Scientific. Measures -50° to 200°C and -58° to 392°F in 0.1 degree increments. The red-plastic case measures 3-3/8" x 1" x 9/16" with a 3-1/2" long pointed metal probe. The LCD readout is 1-1/4" x 1/2" and the unit comes with a replaceable button cell battery and a click-on probe cover. Has min/max, temperature hold, and last-reading functions, and the probe (but not the LCD) is submersible.

Blood of Frog
No eye of newt (we've had a run on frog's blood and newt's eyes lately) but pretty much everything else you could want in prepared slides. The Bacteria series has (12) prepared bacteria slides for budding science majors to gaze upon microscopically. The bacteria include Streptococcus Pyogene, Bacillus Natto, Bacillus Subtilis, Escherichia Coli, Rhizobium Radicicola, Bacillus Mensentericus, Micrococcus Pyogenes, Mycrobacterium Ranae, bacteria in Buccal Carity, Bacterium Brasicae Fermentatae, and Vibrio Verolinensis. The Micro Org series is a package of (12) prepared microorganism slides including Hydrodictyon, Oscillatoria, Pinnularia, Euglena, Cymbella, Bacillus Natto, Clorella, Diatomaceous Earth, Cosmarium, Spirogyra in its vegetative state, Synedra, and Anabaena. All slides are labeled and in storage boxes.

Filtering Flask
From Bomex, this glass filtering flask is 500ml, stands 7" tall x 4-3/16" dia at the base, with a 1-7/16" dia mouth. The flask takes a #8 stopper and a 9mm OD outlet nipple.

Glass Funnel
This funnel looks delicate, but it's Pyrex® so heat won't hurt it. The tough little glass funnel has a 75mm (approx 3") ID mouth and an 80mm long neck with a 6mm ID fluted outlet. No markings.

Measuring pH
This handheld pH meter from Hanna Instruments measures 0-14 pH to 0.01 resolution, accurate to +/- 0.2. Calibration screw for 7.01, and another for 4.01 or 10.01 pH. The unit is 6-3/4" X 2" X 15/16" OA, with a 4-digit 1-1/8" X 1/2" LCD readout, and a replaceable 4-1/8" long x 9mm dia probe that screws into the case. Comes with a tip cover for the probe and (2) button-cell batteries. Don't forget to order the 20mL foil packs of pH 7.01 Buffer Solution, with a chart listing the specific pH of the solution at various temperatures. Made for laboratory or industrial use only, it has a tolerance of +/-0.01 pH at 77°F. Also from Hanna Instruments.

Scope Your Stethos!!
Stethos is Greek for chest. Indeed you can scope your stethos with this stethoscope, or your friend's or your dog's. But it works equally well for picking up any sound being transmitted through a solid medium. Listen to the air flowing through the heating ducts, the water in the pipes, the sounds of machinery, the termites munching on the floor joists!! The color does vary so we will select from what's currently available. We've had blue, teal, red, black, burgandy, green and purple, but there may be other colors yet to be seen! A great discovery device whether for biology or other pursuits. Not of professional quality, but not just a toy.
