Mylar Warmth
They have the look of something designed for the space program. They're mylar, a paper-thin shiny metallic sheet, that comes in handy when your car breaks down in winter, or when you're separated from your climbing group on the slopes of Mt. McKinley. Barring that, they're also a perfect material for a do-it-yourself cold-climate Halloween costume-near impossible to rip by hand, but cut easily with scissors. There's no padding, so they wouldn't be too comfy on your bed, but they sure are warm. They both come folded about the size of a wallet. The Blanket is 52" x 82", the Sleeping Bag is 34" x 84".

Never Weaken
Good advice-and true of this dynamo torch. Actually a (3) LED flashlight, but we think the manufacturer had the Brits in mind when he named it. Has (3) LEDs and a switch that lights (1) or all (3) of them. Runs on an internal, rechargeable lithium-ion battery that you crank up-(1) minute of winding provides (30) minutes of light. (We read it on the box.) And it's a palm-sized cutie that has a very Voyage-to-the-Bottom-of-the-Sea look to it. A must for blackouts!

A Working Wonder
If we had a category just for customers who lust after Jules Verne inventions and elegant gadgetry, this would be in it. The wonderful brass sundial, a reproduction of an antique, is approx 3" dia x 11/16" thick overall, and actually works! A latitudinal gauge lets you tilt the engraved dial to the correct angle for your location, and a bubble and three leveling feet allow the 1-1/2" dia lock-down compass to point in the precise direction. And if you never took it out into the sunshine, you'd still love it for the look and logic of it.

Someday when you're lost in the woods, you'll be very, very glad you ordered this compact survival kit. It's the classic camp director's whistle, raised to new heights. The 4-1/2" x 1-1/8" dia orange-plastic treasure hangs around your neck on a yellow nylon cord. On one end, the whistle. On the other, a compass. 21st Century Walking Stick
Walking sticks have moved into the space age! This walker's/hiker's friend has futuristic features and the look of an inter-galactic weapon. The high-quality collapsible aluminum stick extends from a packable 27" to a full 56", and has a carbide tip with a rubber cover, a removable 2" dia disk to keep the stick from sinking into soft ground, and an internal shock absorber that can be turned on or off. At the top, a 5-LED flashlight with a 90° pivot is embedded in a molded-plastic cane-style handle to light your way. For mountain trekking, lengthen the stick, slip the adjustable canvas wrist strap over your hand, and clutch the stick by the padded foam section below the cane handle. Pump Some Comfort
The better air mattress (from Serta® no less) comes with a rechargeable electric air pump to save your lungs. It's a single, measuring 74" x 25" with (42) cells that will inflate to 1" to 2" of padding when full. One-way valve adjusts air pressure on the fly. The pump itself is 3-1/2" dia x 4-1/2" long. Mattress is dark gray, heavy-duty rubber and will roll up into an approx 5" dia x 25" tube. Easy to pack for camping or kids' sleepovers.
