Are the kids growing up with pride? Radiating good cheer? You can tell for sure with...What? It’s for nuclear radiation? An old Civil Defense meter? Bummer. Apparently, this OCD radiation meter from the Victoreen Mfg. Co. was made to sniff out the residue of the nuclear holocaust when you emerged from your bomb shelter. Calibrated 5 r/hr (Roentgen) with a X 0.1, X1, X10, X100 sensitivity selector, it runs on (1) “D” battery (not included.) The Civil Defense yellow boxes are about 8” x 4–1/2” x 3–1/2”. It comes with complete instructions for use. The CD V–777–2 includes two 4–1/2” long x 1/2” dia dosimeters and a 2” x 4” x 4” dosimeter charger. This one is used, but it works fine, even if it looks a bit scuffed.

Carrying a state secret? Or a knockwurst sandwich? You can hide either in a Deutsche Armee bag in the olive-drab raindrop camouflage pattern--at least during a German rainstorm. The large bag is 11" x 12" x 5" with (3) rubberized straps, a top handle, buckle closures, and set of hooks and loops on the top and bottom so you can stack them or use them as panniers. The small one is a gas-mask bag, 11" x 11" x 4", with (3) compartments inside (slim full-length, 7" x 4", and 4" x 4") and a 3" x 3" x 1" pouch on the side. Single strap closure, belt straps and pistol-belt hooks on the back. Heavy canvas. Interesting look.

Stylish in a forest commando sort of way, and secure, our N-B-C protective suit is from the UK military. Separate pants and hooded shirt are about a 40 regular, or men's medium, although the pants have a more generous, and expandable, waist. (The Brits say they're for folks 5'10".) Lotsa pockets, tabs, hook-and-loop fasteners, suspenders and zippers, and they're a solid forest green, not OD. Surplus (although unworn) and manufactured in 1992, so no nuclear, biological, or chemical guarantees, OK? On the other hand, where else can you buy a new suit at this price?

Could very well be for a gas mask, but that's just a guess, and we know not from whose military. Interesting, though, and rubberized for your protection. It's olive drab, 9-1/2" x 11" x 4", with hook-and-loop belt fasteners. The belt fasteners are oriented so that there's an 8" x 10" snap-flap pocket on the front, a fold-over closure for the bag itself on one short side with a hook-and-loop catch against the body, and a 4" x 6" pocket with hook-and-loop closure on the opposite short side. Good deal if you need to keep stuff dry. Even better after a few hours in the sun and a good spray with a fabric freshener.

You can tell military budgets have been cut when Russia starts selling us her uniform buttons. Our bushels of buttons are 1/2" to 1", mostly metal (brass, copper, silver), mostly Russian (with some Canadian, French, and others), all interesting and collectable. The shiny brass buttons with the stars are nice, if you don't mind a hammer and sickle. We'll pick out (10) for you, but can't promise which ones.

You say you need something to carry your extra Dutch Army machine-gun barrels in? Guess who's got just the ticket. Measures 27" long OA x approx 8" wide, in heavy olive-drab canvas with (2) adjustable shoulder straps and a waist strap. Buncha compartments: (2) at 3" x 2" x 17", (2) at 2" x 2" x 10, (1) at 2" x 2" x 13", and a small pouch under the fold-down, clasp-closed top. Could also carry any number of broken-down fishing rods, or all of instruments for the Harmonicats. Used, but only by a little old Dutch lady corporal to carry her barrels on Sundays.

Direct from your Uncle Sam, (2) each, olive drab wool/nylon military mittens with trigger fingers. Medium size and 12" long OA, but they're knitted mittens, so they fit the largest paws in our office. Don't have a trigger? That spare finger-cover is always handy for scratching your nose.

Dutch duffle bags. Olive-drab military surplus from the banks of the Zuider Zee, exactly the sort of thing a Dutch Master Sergeant would stuff his stuff into. (Your duffle may even have his name on it.) You pick from the medium 26" x 20" x 12" or the large 36" x 23" x 13". They both have sturdy canvas handles, plus straps that attach to the hook closure at the top of the bag. A little sunlight will cure that authentic Dutch mustiness.

Our first olive-drab canvas gas mask bag from the Swedish military is 10" wide. One corner is approx 3" wide x 13" tall, tapering to no width x 12" (think triangle) at the other. Has a hasp and (2) snap closures, a 48" long adjustable clip-on strap, inside pockets that would hold a Boysenberry, pens, and a cell phone nicely, a snap-strap that could hold it on a bike, and the slight fragrance of a military warehouse that will dissipate in the sun and fresh air. Made to hang horizontally, like most gas mask bags, with the opening on the side and the hasp in the front. Nice general-purpose alternative to a messenger's bag for 1/5 the price.

Standard issue for U.S. Special Ops Forces and pilots, it's been updated by SFC Matt Larsen, a Ranger trainer and graduate of the SERE and Jungle Survival programs. In paperback, it has 382 technique-packed and illustrated pages of guidance for staying alive on land and sea. (Our personal hint for surviving in the U.S. Army? Always carry a clipboard for camouflage.)

Let the rest of the world outfit its armies with rockets and tanks. We prefer Switzerland, with its Swiss Army Knife and, now, its Swiss Army Horseshoe Nails. Our each is a box of (100) shiny, flat, steel nails with square beveled heads, each head imprinted with a tiny cross. The #6 nails are 2-1/8" long. The #8s are 2-7/16" long. Even the box is a retro find. Such sticklers for details, these pacifistic Swiss.
