Fallout Shelter Sign

They're Back! Those of a certain age will remember being taught to crouch under their school desks in case of nuclear attack. Shortly thereafter, the gov't, in its infinite wisdom zoomed about thecityscape plastering black and yellow signs on buildings with basements to designate them as fallout shelters wherein it stored cans of water and radiation meters which were so insensitive that any reading could only mean the past tense of crispiness. We have a quantity of these signs, brand new in the sense that they have never been plastered, but antique in the sense that they are the Fifties originals. 10" x 14" , 25 ga. galvanized steel. They have a black base coat on the front over sprayed with orange/yellow reflective paint in the familiar design rendered nearby by our faithful artist. This is a true collector's item fetching $50 and up in antique stores! A tasteful addition to even the dullest basement hangout.

Fear No Nordic Gas

Designed to stand up to the infamous Helsinki Miasma, this gas mask hails from the Finnish military (it's the standard NATO M61 model, circa 1994) but these days it should only be considered a collectible. Don't depend on it for self-preservation. In gray rubber with the filter on the side and adjustable straps, it measures approx 8" tall x 5-1/2" wide.

Have A Balaclava

You pick either the beige or black polypropylene balaclava, 13" crown to collar, fleece-lined and somewhat stretchable for you bigheads, with a single (also stretchable) 3"-4" face opening. Think ski mask. Made right here in the U.S. Not to be confused with baklava, which is much too sticky to wear on your head.

Four-Way Swedish Flashlight

Slightly larger than a cigarette pack at 4-3/8" x 2-5/8" x 1-1/2", our brown-and-olive Swedish army flashlight has an incandescent bulb behind a clever 1-1/2" dia lens that can be left clear or covered with slide-up red, green or opaque lenses. The opaque one has a tiny slanted slot to emit only a little map-reading illumination. Mounts either on a belt or via a pair of slotted holes to fit over buttons. You supply (2) "C" cell batteries, but you get a spare bulb inside.

Giant Franco Canteen

It's a G.I. canteen, except in this case the G. that issued the canteen was in Paris, so you're allowed to carry wine in it. Lightly used, made of aluminum in the same kidney-shape profile as the U.S. Army's pre-plastic version, but in a longer, 45 oz capacity instead of one quart. Same screw cap on a chain, slides into a similar integrated cup with fold-out handles which in turn fits into a 2-snap olive-drab pouch with a belt strap/pistol-belt hook. Measures 9" tall x 5" wide x approx 3" front to back.

Teddy Roosevelt-Era Surplus

Not a joke. These are serious vintage, U.S. Army infantry haversacks from the Spanish-American War era, made circa 1898. They're a dark khaki, 14" square x 4" thick, with drawstring closures. They have slender internal pockets along both inside edges and (2) 2" wide x 10" deep pockets bracketing a 9" wide x 10" deep pocket on the inside of the flap. The flap itself has a strap and buckle and will still bear its original stenciling, which may be "U.S.," crossed rifles, a cavalry-unit number, a combination thereof, or some other unique identification.

Praise The Lord And Pass This

It's "The Hymnal" for U.S. Army and Navy services, and it looks brand new to us, or perhaps only sung from by a little old PFC on Sundays. From the United States Government Printing Office, 1942 (with an A.S. Barnes & Co. 1941 copyright). In a military drab-brown hardcover, the 607 pages include prayers and services for Protestant, Catholic and Jewish troops, plus over 400 pages of hymns, with words and 2-stave music.

Military Dog Dish

This is actually called a rubber sink by the U.S. gummint, made for army field use, and it really is very useful. The olive-drab rubber, 9" dia x 4-1/2" deep, holds approx (1) gallon when full, but folds up completely. It's just a touch small to call a sink, we think, but it's a perfect portable dog waterer. (Also a large, very unattractive rain hat.) Complete with a tab to hang it from.

Masks, Gas, Russian

Assembled in the U.S. from Russian parts, anyway. What we have here is a gas mask for children, although frankly, the smallest of them are really more Yorkshire-terrier sized. New, but surplus, and while they're rated NBC for nuclear/biological/chemical contaminants, they carry absolutely no guarantees. These are to be used as part of a collection, or for costume/novelty purposes. These adult masks come with an integrated, screw-on filter canister, carrying pouch, and (6) plastic eye-lens covers. The medium ones are for adults with a facial circumference (measure around the crown of the head and under the chin) between 25” and 25-3/4”.

Sack Up Your Ruck

If your life, like ours, is practically overrun with ruck, you'll need a good rucksack. This one is military surplus from Switzerland, which is just jammed border to border with ruck, so they make the best rucksacks. Rubberized body, leather bottom, metal brace at the waist, adjustable and leather arm straps, cord and strap closures for the top flap, and an extra 11-1/2" x 9" flap pocket on the front. It measures 20" x 15" x 9" overall and, while used, is in extremely good condition. You know what neatniks the Swiss are. (We're not counting the slightly musty fragrance that can be banished with a spritz of fabric spray and a few hours in the sun.)

Bolshevik Buttons

Add the glitter of bright, brass-tone aluminum buttons, 9/16" dia, to tops, jeans, purses, backpacks. The buttons are new and convex, with a stationary 1/8" sewing loop on the back, and an embossed star and small hammer and sickle design on the front. All right, so they were from the Soviet military (circa late 1970s). The design is very discreet. And we weren't the ones who had to tear down a wall, so you can consider these the spoils of a cold war. (Lots and lots of spoils. Left-leaning artists who want to cover a giant canvas or Soviet statue with them should call for a volume discount.)
