Magnetic Tape
The Advantek QuickGlance retractable tape measure is only magnetic on the end, you understand. This standard 1" wide x 25-foot tape measure has a magnetized tang on the end so when you're working with ferrous metals it sticks where you put it. Tape is graduated down to 1/32nds with half-, quarter- and eighth-inches labeled with fractions. Inches are also labeled with the count and foot-plus, i.e. it reads both "77" and "6F-5" to avoid cutting tragedies borne of arithmetic confusion. Has a pocket clip and lock button. Nice, especially at this price.

A Drive Train From Scratch
Build your own. These are very nice kits from Tamiya, but not for beginners or the fumble-fingered, since they’re fairly complex and can take a couple hours to assemble. The Single Gear Motor Kit has a 3VDC motor that draws approx 60mA no load, stalls at 130mA, and runs approx 38 to 1039 rpm. Finished size is approx 2-3/4" long x 1-1/4" x 7/8" with dual 1-3/8" long x 1/8" dia hexagonal shafts. The Twin Gear Motor Kit has a pair of 2.3VDC motors that draw approx 60mA no load, stall at 130mA, and will run 60 to 212 rpm. Finished size is approx 3" long x 2" x 7/8" with dual 1-1/16" long x 1/8” dia hexagonal shafts.
