Float Like A (Graphite) Butterfly
Physics faculty alert: It's very small, but teaches a powerful lesson, this little diamagnetic-properties demo kit. You get (4) plated magnets, each 1/4" square x 3/32", and (2) 1/4" square pieces of graphite to float above them. The graphite may have slight chips along the edge but that won't affect the effect. But we don't, as they say in Brooklyn, mean that in no bad way. This very finely made swivel-handle pin vise is a boon for jewelers, crafters, fly-tiers, and model makers. Knurled brass with a rubber head and barrel, it measures 4-1/8" long, with a pair of 1-9/16" long double-headed collets, (1) with 3mm and 0.5 mm IDs and (1) with 2mm and 0. 5mm IDs. The spare collet stores in the barrel.

And easy to store. One of the better pick-up tools we've seen. Folds to just over 16" to store, but locks open at 30" with spring steel arms on an aluminum frame. It has soft, suction-cup-shaped grabbers and big, locking pistol grip. Pretty good gripping capacity too-maybe to 10 lbs or so. Ten furlongs are condensed to (7) inches, with very small horses, in the Desktop Derby, a 6-horse straight track that lets you win money while you teach the children the evils of pari-mutuel betting. The electric track pulsates and moves the nags along at a pace of about 45 seconds per race, with heart-stopping lead changes. The best part is that they're un-handicapable: a different horse, in a different lane, seems to win every time. Measures 9-7/8" x 3-1/2" x 2" high and runs off (2) "AA" batteries, included. (Stable the horses in the base between races.)

Newtonian demonstrator for science teachers. Mindless play for the rest of us. These are shiny, nicely balanced, high-performance examples of the classic Newton’s Cradle – a ball on one end of a row of (5) suspended, barely touching balls swings into the others, and the ball at the opposite end reacts to the collision. The 11/16” dia balls in the small version (all-metal frame 6-1/2" high x 4" x 4-1/4") will collide about 30 times. The 7/8” dia balls in the large version (metal frame 5-1/4" high x 4" x 6", with a wooden base) will collide about 100 times. Awesome. Even more awesome that we paid someone to count the bounces just for you! (Unpacking note: Less awesome if you just yank it out by the suspension lines and pull a couple of balls loose. Be gentle.)

Through our little black-plastic right-angle viewer. It's a 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" hexagon, and Paul says that if you buy (2) you can see eye-to-eye with yourself, which is a little spooky. Great for a little light spying on the street, and if you find a way to stick it over the lens of a small digital camera, you'll get great candid shots.

It doesn't get much cooler in the robotic-arm-kit game. The assembled arm is 15" tall x 9" long x approx 3-1/2" wide. It's 2-pronged hand opens to 1-3/4", lifts up to 3.5 oz, swings 120 degrees at the wrist, pivots 300 degrees at the elbow, and sits on a base that swings 180 degrees up and down and rotates 270 degrees, like, well, an arm. Controlled by (5) 2-axis joy-sticks and powered by (4) D-Cell batteries that you provide. Includes a hand-mounted light and over-torque and gear-breakage alarms, which is more than your arm has. Requires simple hand tools for assembly and is made for ages 13 and up.
