Junior Science Library
Just the ticket for tyro scientists, these 40pp, hard-cover books are from the Thompson/Gale "Routes of Science" series. Full of color illustrations and photos and with a wealth of sidebars, they cover the basics and history of gravity, geology and light, including mini-biographies of important figures. Field & Forest Guide
Titled "The Field and Forest Handy Book," this volume has been justifiably in print since 1906. Written by Daniel C. "Uncle Dan" Beard, the founder of the Sons of Daniel Boone and one of the founders of the BSA, it's a compendium of eternally relevant woodland lore, from building cabins, sleds, boats, and bridges to camping in swamps. The only part we skipped was on how to cook a muskrat. (We know a place that delivers.) Loaded with illustrations. In soft cover from David Godine's Nonpareil Books, 428 pages.

(Locking) Syringes
Or sort-of-locking. Push the plunger down and they lock in place, but push the 1/8" nipple down on a hard surface and they'll unlock for re-use. Handy in the shop or craft room for oil, grease, paints, and glues. (Also quite useful for getting liquid medication into the dog.) They measure 3-1/2" long x 9/16" dia and hold 5ml, are graduated in .2ml increments, and have threaded tops. Note the throwaway price.

These perfect little clear-plastic canisters have snug pull-off tops. They fit into die-cut circles in a black or white foam pad for display or shipping, with the cut-out foam placed inside the canisters. The foam makes them ideal for safe storage and artful display of individual coins, seeds, insects, stones (precious, semi-precious, or gall-), baby teeth, locks of hair, or any number of tiny treasures. If they saw this color map eight times a day, they'd know where every place is-and its capital. Snap this tough, 8.5" x 11" laminated sheet into a school notebook and eventually they'll have to read it. It's a very nice world map with capital cities on one side, a U.S. map with state capitals on the other. It includes other major cities plus partial Canadian and Mexican bonus areas. Current, barring a coup since we got our latest shipment.

Magical Flag Placemat
