Neon strip cardboard spectacles with diffraction gratings as the lenses. You can see the regular world, but all light sources and bright objects appear in multiple rainbow hued images. The effect is a little as though the whole world were a giant hologram. Great stocking stuffer or birthday party item for grade school ages.

Foster fantasy! The 4" flexible rubber animal heads are hand puppets for young children, although they are probably finger puppets for you. The realistic heads, with lots of teeth and beady eyes, include a hippo, elephant, giraffe, gorilla, tiger, cougar, camel, crocodile, snake, wolf and polar bear, plus a goofy horse who looks like he's been drinking the Budweiser(r), instead of pulling it. Maybe that explains how he got in with such a wild crowd. We'll pick out (4) different animals for you.

It's nice to know that some things don't change. One is the Jacob's Ladder. Still made with (6) slabs of wood, each about 2" x 2" x 1/2", each a bright combination of colors, and all connected by a contrasting ribbon. Hold one end up and let the string of slabs dangle. When you flop the top block end for end, each lower slab in turn will flop end for end. Fascinating. Particularly if you are about 5 to 9 years old.

If these were balloons, there'd be some guy in a clown suit making them into little animals -- but they're chenille (that's au courant for "pipe cleaners"). Our each is a pack of (12) 12" stems, either all red or all yellow (our choice). Their 5 mm diameter fattens to 15 mm every few inches, so if you insist on making an animal, we'd suggest a snake that just finished a four-course meal.

They are 5/8" inch diameter spheres with a weak but workable magnetism. They come in a nice range of mixed colors in packages of (20). Not terribly strong, but they do cling together to make wonderful and unlikely chains and stacks and stalactites and things. They look like the gumballs of our youth, and will fascinate youngsters without the corollary risk of cavities!!

Black and white sand in a viscous colored fluid. The sand and fluid are between 5-1/2" wide x 3-1/2" high panes of glass, framed on a gimbaled stand. Flip the panel and watch the sand swirl and eddy into endlessly new pictures of dunes, drifts, mountains or moonscapes, depending on your imagination and the pattern they form. The mix of black and white creates a definite third dimension to the images. Pretty neat, as these things go.

We have 1/8" plywood cut into shapes up to 8-3/4" tall that were supposed to sell as picture frames. Well, of course they didn't sell. Each is a crafty design with suggested details (and with an almost-die-cut center punch-out) better suited to be a Christmas ornament, Easter decoration, etc. So far we've seen a teddy bear, duck, bunny rabbit, cat, unicorn and Christmas tree. You bring a little sandpaper, paint and imagination, plus a few simple tools, and you'll dazzle everyone with your talent. You'll get at least (2) different designs in your pack of (3).

Let little Emily make her own play dates. This 7" x 9" spiral phone book has cutouts to frame 2-1/4" x 3-1/4" photos of (15) friends. Each page has double-sided tape in place to hold a photo, and space to print each name and phone number. Elemental, but the preschool crowd will like it.

3-D puzzles of assorted pterosaurs and dinosaurs in assorted hot colors. Picture these prehistoric creatures parading around the edge of a birthday cake for a small dinophile. Have an emery board handy.) Minimalist, but cute.
