Electric Motor and Magnet Kits

A trio of the best science education kits we have seen dealing with electricity, magnetism, motors and generators. The 44 page instruction booklets are educational and complete; state problem, approach and explain what is happening for a series of projects of graded difficulty. The Motor/Generator kit includes several introductory experiments on magnetism as well as six complete motor generator projects. The Electromagnet kit provides experiments including the building of an electromagnet, a doorbell chime, a telegraph, a relay and an electric catapult. The Levitation Set experiments with magnetic fields, gravity, and equilibrium; plus everything you need to build a magnetic levitation train! All are complete except for batteries. Strongly recommended for their quality, the accuracy of their science and the interest they will sustain. Ages 10-18.

Duck!
Spin the ribbed 7" handle of this hand-powered prop between your palms, and watch it take off. (If it lands instead of flying off into the wild blue yonder, reverse the spin!) Neon handle, bright, metallic-flaked 8" propeller, and a lift so high we imprinted it with our logo - the airborne Jarvis. It's all plastic, and won't decapitate anyone, but it's still for 10-year-olds and up.

Moving Sand Art
Black and white sand in a viscous colored fluid. The sand and fluid are between 5-1/2" wide x 3-1/2" high panes of glass, framed on a gimbaled stand. Flip the panel and watch the sand swirl and eddy into endlessly new pictures of dunes, drifts, mountains or moonscapes, depending on your imagination and the pattern they form. The mix of black and white creates a definite third dimension to the images. They come in assorted colored plastic frames (our choice) and are pretty neat, as these things go.

Lay Siege To The Doghouse!
WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD-Small Parts. Not for children under 3 yrs.
Right after you build your own working medieval catapult or trebuchet. All you'll need is glue, scissors and a steady hand (plus a small bag of marbles or rocks or something as a counterweight for the trebuchet) to construct these wooden, Canadian-made siege engine kits. The catapult stands 6" tall x 5" wide x 10" long and will toss assorted stuff 15 feet or farther, depending upon the stuff. The finished trebuchet will be 26" long x 18" wide x 24" tall and will propel small objects (meatballs?) 20 feet or more. Both include detailed instructions. Note: Please don't propel small mammals, and please don't put anyone's eye out.

Doodle In 3-D
Think of it as a shortcut to learning perspective. This clever 50-sheet pad of white, 7" x 4-1/2" paper has a fine red and blue grid pattern that shows your drawing and doodling in 3-D when you wear the included 3-D glasses. It's our candidate for the why-didn't-I-think-of-that award this year.

Sunprint® Kit
Sunprints (or cyanotypes, or photograms) are everyone's favorite photo-sensitivity experiment, from third-graders to graphic artists and fine artists. You pick: The Sunprinters are a dozen 3-15/16" square sheets of photosensitive paper, an acrylic backing sheet and instructions. The large Sunprint Kit has (15) sheets of 12" x 7-3/4" photosensitive paper plus a clear acrylic sheet of the same size. Great for classroom demonstrations, and can be used to make prints from photo negatives as well as interesting effects from opaque or translucent objects. All you add is sunshine and water.

Harness the power of the wind, lemons, potatoes or mud. The Windmill Generator has a generator and propeller with (6) 5-3/8” wide blades and a tail. Minimal assembly is required to mount them on a large soda bottle (easier than building a tower, but you could do that, too) and watch the wind light up the LEDs. The Enviro-Battery Kit has copper and zinc plates, cups, an LED monitor on a little tower, sound module, LCD clock plus wire and tape. Cleverly made, and mighty heuristic, too. For someone entranced by hydraulics, or for a whole classroom of students, there’s the Pathfinders 4-In-1 kit, with the excavator, scissors lift, a cherry picker and the platform lifter. Fun and educational kits made up of unfinished wood, transparent tubing, and plastic syringes, which power the movement. As you might expect they range in size, but the bases are all approx. 3-1/2" x 8". Very clever teaching tools for ages 8 and up.

The Happiest Hamster

Our very favorite new pet at AS&S goes by his Japanese name, Hamusuta, and runs around and around in his translucent, 5" dia plastic ball. Or you can take the happy little hamster out and watch him scurry all over the place, redirecting when he hits obstacles, like a tiny, furry roombot without the vacuuming. He's 3-1/2" long, in authentic beige and white with little pink ears and nose. Packs an enormous amount of cute into a small furry package. You add (1) "AAA" battery.

A real desktop mesmerizer. This 7"x 5" moving sand sculpture creates endless sand-dune vistas, and can be so easily flipped to start over that you need never go back to actually working. Hydrophobic Sand

Put this "Magic Sand" in water and it won't get wet. Which is weird, but true, like so much you read in this catalog. Originally developed to trap oil spills, this stuff lets you build sand castles under water. When you pour off the water, the sand is dry. Each colorful dispenser bottle holds approx 50 ml. We'll pick a pair from assorted colors, like orange, purple and hot pink.
