Little Rubber Critters

No 10-year-old is ever really content without a selection of pocket-sized creatures to carry around. Just gives them a secure feeling, knowing there's a hammerhead shark or scorpion tucked away for dull moments in the car. Here's a troika of favorites, all approx 2" to 3" long. We'll pick (6) assorted dinosaur specimens from among the albertosaurus, ankylosaurus, triceratops, spinosaurus, stegosaurus and others.

Light 'n' Laser Twofer
A bright little flashlight with (8) super-bright white LEDs in a circle and a less-than-5mW red laser right in the middle. One click and it's a flashlight, another click and it's a laser pointer. Scrunch A Buncha Cans
Reduce recycling space with this wall-mount steel can crusher. Very satisfying to use: pull the 12-1/4" long padded handle and it easily smooshes cans up to 5-3/8" tall (standard aluminum beverage size) into squat little accordion-pleated stumps. The black and gray steel unit mounts with the included screws and has a handy bottle opener under its the front lip, because you don't.

For archeologically minded numismatists, now comes the "Dirty Old Coins" kit, complete with (5) genuine, hand-struck ancient coins from 1,500 to over 2,000 years old, all with their own authentic dirt and ancient schmutz still attached. All "Made in the Roman Empire. Assembled in the U.S.A." You get a 12pp instruction booklet, a PC or Mac-compatible CD-ROM coin image database for identification, a stiff brush, double-lens magnifier, and cleaning and de-corrosion fluids. Most coins will be worth a few dollars, the supplier says, but some rare finds could be worth "hundreds or even thousands." Plenty of fun either way.

Cut Right To It
This all-purpose scissors is the favorite of everyone at A.S.&S.: Pat uses his to cut and strip wire. C.J. uses his to slit the tape on packages. Mary Ann uses hers to open bags of pretzels. It's 6-1/4" long overall, with a very sharp 2" stainless steel blade and large, comfortable handles. It would sell for $9.95 retail if it was new, but it was used for one day to cut cloth in the assembly plant of a major car company, then discarded. Quality control is a wonderful thing.

RARE FIND!
Rare earth magnets are usually killers for their size, and these thick nickel neodymium discs are no exception. The price, on the other hand, for (3) 7/16" dia x 1/4" 5-lb lift or (2) 9/16” dia x 3/16” 8-lb lift magnets each stored on a 2" dia steel disc, is a rare exception.
