Peltier Heat Pump
High tech comes to Am Sci & Surp!! It is here in the form of a Peltier junction, a thermo-electric device that translates electric power into heat, and perversely, into cool. Apply current @ 3-12 VDC to the gizmo and it extracts thermal energy from one face, thereby cooling it. The heat is dumped onto the other face, thereby heating it. Please note: you must use a heat sink on the hot side or the junction will fry itself, since it can quickly create a 65° C temperature differential in a no load situation. Stack two, or build a cascade to increase the thermal differential created. Or run it backwards. Apply heat or cold to the relevant face and produce a current. Amazing for science projects and experiments. Practical for coffee warmers, beer coolers and mini-refrigerator or warming oven applications. Comes with instructions. Large is 1-9/16" sq. x 3/16" thick.

Tough Gear Motor
Small but durable. Measures 2-7/16" long x 1-5/16" dia. and has a 3/16" x 3/8" long flattened offset shaft. Runs between 6-12 VDC. At 12 VDC, it spins 7 rpm and draws 90mA with a 500mA stall current. Gearbox ratio is approx 400:1. Has (3) 3/32" mounting holes on the shaft face. Reversible.

Or sort-of-locking. Push the plunger down and they lock in place, but push the 1/8" nipple down on a hard surface and they'll unlock for re-use. Handy in the shop or craft room for oil, grease, paints, and glues. (Also quite useful for getting liquid medication into the dog.) They measure 3-1/2" long x 9/16" dia and hold 5ml, are graduated in .2ml increments, and have threaded tops. Note the throwaway price.

It's actually a fine way for adults to work on their upper-body strength and kill bugs at the same time. 18" long, with a 6" wide paddle lined with metal grid. A coil in the handle sends high voltage through the paddle when a button is pushed, hit a bug with it and the bug will bug you no more. But despite the manufacturer's claims that it's safe for people, Scott reports that flesh-paddle contact delivers a nasty shock, nasty enough to say "Keep this away from kids!" We've seen these in other catalogs for about twice the price, so buy it from us. Just be careful with it. 2 AA batteries, not included.
