LEDs By The Dozen
Light emitting diodes. Solid state devices that provide the ubiquitous power and indicator lights on your electronic gadgetry. Unlike lamps, there are no filaments that glow. Rather, some two volts of DC power at a miniscule 10 to 20 milliamps of current get the chemistry excited, and they just plain emit. Emit is a good word, too, as they don't really cast light, but glow brightly. We have a nice assortment of 3 and 5 MM diameter sizes in red, green, orange, and yellow. The longer lead is always positive, the shorter always negative, and you always need a current limiting resistor (about 500 to 1,000 ohms for 5 to 9 volt DC sources) to keep the current in the 10-20 MA range. If that's Greek to you you're either going to blow a lot of LED's or learn to change incandescent indicator lamps ! !

Gadgeteers, get out your charge card. This is an instrument you absolutely have to own. It reaches down below sofa cushions, inside piggy banks, into fish tanks, and past a gallbladder. Not simultaneously, of course. The slim stainless steel alligator forceps is 11" long OA, with a 2-1/2" angled handle and an 8-1/2" reach. It has small 5/8" long serrated jaws, delicate but tight, at the very tip! Better buy an extra. We guarantee people are going to "borrow" these if they see them.

RARE FIND!
Rare earth magnets are usually killers for their size, and these thick nickel neodymium discs are no exception. The price, on the other hand, for (3) 7/16" dia x 1/4" 5-lb lift or (2) 9/16” dia x 3/16” 8-lb lift magnets each stored on a 2" dia steel disc, is a rare exception.

Helping Hands... and Eyes
We just wish there was something, anything, to do around here that required this thing, on account of it's so cool. Our newest Helping Hand has a pair of alligator clips on swiveling arms, likewise a 2-1/4" dia x 1.5X magnifier plus an LED flashlight on a gooseneck. Everything swivels every way there is and tightens with little thumbscrews-and some of the configurations look like it's maybe alive, and from Venus. Jewelry makers? Diamond cutters? Forensic scientists? Maybe we'll start making small electronics, or tying flies.

But we don't, as they say in Brooklyn, mean that in no bad way. This very finely made swivel-handle pin vise is a boon for jewelers, crafters, fly-tiers, and model makers. Knurled brass with a rubber head and barrel, it measures 4-1/8" long, with a pair of 1-9/16" long double-headed collets, (1) with 3mm and 0.5 mm IDs and (1) with 2mm and 0. 5mm IDs. The spare collet stores in the barrel.

Life too dull? You need a whetstone, and this one, while it's not a stone at all, is a big improvement. It's a 4-sided diamond sharpening block, 6" long x 2-1/2" on a side, sitting snugly in a wooden holder with slip-resistant rubber feet. The sides are 200, 300, 400 and 600 grit, so you can work your way up to a razor's edge on knives, chisels, or anything that needs a little edge.

On a 2-1/4" x 2-1/2" cast iron base with a small-parts well, it has a sliding arm on a ball-joint with (2) alligator clips that move on (2) axes. On a second rotating ball-joint arm is a generous 3-14" dia 2X magnifier with a 6X inset lens and a pair of white LEDS. More like (3) helping hands than (1).
