Chemiluminescence Kit

The Cool Blue Light Experiment Kit uses copper sulfate, perborate and luminol to produce light from the energy released in a chemical reaction. The instructions recommend this kit for experimenters nine years old and up, with adult supervision. Some experiments call for the addition of household chemicals like chlorine bleach, hydrogen peroxide or sugar.

Electric Motor and Magnet Kits

A trio of the best science education kits we have seen dealing with electricity, magnetism, motors and generators. The 44 page instruction booklets are educational and complete; state problem, approach and explain what is happening for a series of projects of graded difficulty. The Motor/Generator kit includes several introductory experiments on magnetism as well as six complete motor generator projects. The Electromagnet kit provides experiments including the building of an electromagnet, a doorbell chime, a telegraph, a relay and an electric catapult. The Levitation Set experiments with magnetic fields, gravity, and equilibrium; plus everything you need to build a magnetic levitation train! All are complete except for batteries. Strongly recommended for their quality, the accuracy of their science and the interest they will sustain. Ages 10-18.

Diving Submarine

Back in the days when technology was a good guy, kids got diving submarines that they charged with baking powder and played with in the bath tub. Now kids can have the same fun again. Geology for those with short attention spans? The original Magic Rocks®, of course! Mix the solution in a jar of water, drop in the pebbles, and watch them grow into a forest of multi-color stalagmites. Growth starts in 10 minutes, is impressive in 30 minutes, and complete (up to 4" tall) in 2 hours. Extra credit if you can make it grow stalactites by gluing the pebbles to the bottom of a jar, then pouring the solution in and turning it upside down. Who knows? Maybe it will work. Comes with a set of marine decals to decorate the jar. Definitely not for use with living fish. For ages 10 and up.

Sunprint® Kit
Sunprints (or cyanotypes, or photograms) are everyone's favorite photo-sensitivity experiment, from third-graders to graphic artists and fine artists. You pick: The Sunprinters are a dozen 3-15/16" square sheets of photosensitive paper, an acrylic backing sheet and instructions. The large Sunprint Kit has (15) sheets of 12" x 7-3/4" photosensitive paper plus a clear acrylic sheet of the same size. Great for classroom demonstrations, and can be used to make prints from photo negatives as well as interesting effects from opaque or translucent objects. All you add is sunshine and water.

Our PC-9 rubber-band powered styro airplane boasts a big, long rubber power plant, plastic prop, and landing gear. Measures 15" nose to tail with an 18" wingspan. Takes some light assembly but, the directions say, "when you play this plane very proficiently, you will find that it can be made more wonderful flying ways." Indeed. Rated for 200 feet of flight (80% longer than the Wright brother's first flight!), but we'd avoid really windy days for the best proficiently flying.

For someone entranced by hydraulics, or for a whole classroom of students, there’s the Pathfinders 4-In-1 kit, with the excavator, scissors lift, a cherry picker and the platform lifter. Fun and educational kits made up of unfinished wood, transparent tubing, and plastic syringes, which power the movement. As you might expect they range in size, but the bases are all approx. 3-1/2" x 8". Very clever teaching tools for ages 8 and up.
