A rather dumb looking 6" bird with a felt covered head and has plastic feet. Worse, he cannot get his fill of water. You buy the drinks. Fluid inside condenses from the evaporative cooling of the water off the bird's beak, making it top heavy and dunking it back into the water. The condensate rejoins the liquid pool in the bird's bulb, and he tips up again. Process continues indefinitely. It works, but it's not any more than moderately well made, and not any more than moderately priced. WARNING! The fluid and dye inside the bird can permanently stain, and the bird's glass body can easily be broken. Children are fascinated by the bobbing bird, and the educational possibilities are great. But they should watch it, not fondle it!!

2" flywheel in well made metal frame. The trick is the same as it has been for 100 years. Wind the string through the spindle, pull it firmly to set the flywheel spinning, and perform effortless balancing magic on pencil tips, string tightropes, and the like. We tend to forget that bicycles and aircraft navigation both rely heavily on gyroscopic principles. It's never too early to tell the kids. Besides, it's fun.

We have a huge pile of flash cards bearing the Smithsonian imprimatur. Topics vary from birds to Australia, Halloween to dinosaurs, the Civil War to planets. Even cats, safaris and science are addressed. Each card is 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" with a full color photo on one side and a paragraph of information on the back. They're pre-packed in (8's) and well give you (8) packs for a total of (64) miscellaneous cards of our choice.

Simple, yet clever 1" dia. by 3" long plastic device to demonstrate the vortex effect of a tornado. Partially fill with water one of the two half-gallon size plastic soda bottles which you supply. Screw the bottles into opposite ends of the tube which we supply. Tip so the full bottle is on top and give it a circular starting whirl. Presto! You have a vortex. Call it a tornado if you're a meteorologist, a Charybdis if you're a classicist, or a whirlpool if you're into oceanography. Lots of fun and a fine opportunity to attempt to explain the effects of the earth's rotation on water draining out of a bathtub. The phenomena are related we're told, but good luck!!

An easy way to light up the kids' eyes! Teach them to wire a simple circuit with our basic components. The knife switch is mounted on a 1-1/2"x3" black-plastic base. The miniature plastic socket holds a standard flashlight bulb with a 14 mm dia screw base. We pack 6 volt and 3 volt round bulbs, or 1.5 volt bell-shaped bulbs, (5) to a package.(Bulbs are rated slightly higher to prevent them from burning out.) Or hook up the black plastic and metal 2" x 4-1/2" telegraph key with brass contacts and (2) terminal posts with nuts. Our blue-plastic holder for (1) "D" battery has a small tab at each end to hook a lead to, and a 1/8" square mounting hole at each corner. You add the mounting surface and the know-how. Actual bulb voltage listed in parenthesis.

Two educational Science Kits that kids will love! Fun projects. Great boxes. Instructive instructions! Secret Codes teaches cryptography with invisible ink markers, decoder wheels, spy manuals and more. Fingerprint Files includes the history of fingerprints, and all you'll need to take them, using actual police and FBI methods, and dust surfaces for matching prints. Very nice as small gifts, or for home schooling. Both are for ages 8 and up.

Absolutely incredible device! The MirageĀ®, a precision optical instrument, creates three-dimensional images of objects of your choice where there is nothing. Drop pennies, keys or similar small objects (your sister won't fit) into the 2-3/8" dia opening of this 9" dia x 3" high flying-saucer-shaped disc, and a perfect image of the object will appear floating above it. The image is so real friends will try to grasp it, but their fingers will close on thin air! Use it as a high-tech centerpiece with a flower as the object! A booklet (included) explains the magic. New coating provides protection for the mirror surfaces. Highly recommended. Made in the USA.

A box of illusions: make big objects look small, and small objects look big; change black and white into color; turn drawings into old-style movies - just for starters. You get a motorized zoetrope/spinner with discs and strips, and a really amazing "altered perspective chamber," along with directions for a dozen optical activities. It's really mind-bending - but don't forget to buy (2) "AA" batteries for the zoetrope. Spinning it by hand just doesn't work as well! For ages 8 to adult.

Another oldie but goodie. 5" high evacuated clear glass stand 3" in diameter at the top. A four bladed vane is balanced on a needle inside the sphere. Because opposite surfaces of the vanes are black and white, incident radiant energy is absorbed or reflected to a different degree. The result is a spinning vane. The brighter the light, the faster it spins. Simple, but compelling. Brief explanatory instruction sheet included.

Bright and bouncy, these thick colorful balloons inflate to a super 30" dia! Great for homemade weather balloons, giant whoopee cushions, fun in the pool, or just kicking around the yard. Need strong lungs to inflate, so these aren't for smokers; swallowable, so they're not for kiddies under 8 either. Assorted colors.

Black and white sand in a viscous colored fluid. The sand and fluid are between 5-1/2" wide x 3-1/2" high panes of glass, framed on a gimbaled stand. Flip the panel and watch the sand swirl and eddy into endlessly new pictures of dunes, drifts, mountains or moonscapes, depending on your imagination and the pattern they form. The mix of black and white creates a definite third dimension to the images. Pretty neat, as these things go.
