A Working Wonder
If we had a category just for customers who lust after Jules Verne inventions and elegant gadgetry, this would be in it. The wonderful brass sundial, a reproduction of an antique, is approx 3" dia x 11/16" thick overall, and actually works! A latitudinal gauge lets you tilt the engraved dial to the correct angle for your location, and a bubble and three leveling feet allow the 1-1/2" dia lock-down compass to point in the precise direction. And if you never took it out into the sunshine, you'd still love it for the look and logic of it.

Soldering Gun in a Jar

Lay Siege To The Doghouse!

Right after you build your own working medieval catapult or trebuchet. All you'll need is glue, scissors and a steady hand (plus a small bag of marbles or rocks or something as a counterweight for the trebuchet) to construct these wooden, Canadian-made siege engine kits. The catapult stands 6" tall x 5" wide x 10" long and will toss assorted stuff 15 feet or farther, depending upon the stuff. The finished trebuchet will be 26" long x 18" wide x 24" tall and will propel small objects (meatballs?) 20 feet or more. Both include detailed instructions. Note: Please don't propel small mammals, and please don't put anyone's eye out.

The manufacturer of this great little device, C&A Scientific Company Inc., calls this a Spy Scope, but we think its multiple optical applications in one very small package are the story here. The very cool 8 X 20 spotting scope has an adjustable focal length from 1" to infinity. It measures a mere 4-7/8" long when extended, with a rubber grip and eyepiece cover and wrist strap. And it comes with a 3-1/4" tall 5X loupe that's threaded to mate with the scope to create a 25X microscope. The plastic microscope stand/extender is also threaded and will come apart from the loupe.
