If we had a category just for customers who lust after Jules Verne inventions and elegant gadgetry, this would be in it. The wonderful brass sundial, a reproduction of an antique, is approx 3" dia x 11/16" thick overall, and actually works! A latitudinal gauge lets you tilt the engraved dial to the correct angle for your location, and a bubble and three leveling feet allow the 1-1/2" dia lock-down compass to point in the precise direction. And if you never took it out into the sunshine, you'd still love it for the look and logic of it.

Best name we could think of, OK? Attach this white HDPE spray bottle to a garden hose and it spews the contents plus water on, well, whatever you're spraying stuff on. A new, unused bottle that was made for Armor-All, it'll do the same thing with car wash detergent, fertilizer, or any other liquid. It's sized for a standard 1" hose fitting. The top has a 3-way, on/off/water-only control plus a little snap-in shim to direct the spray downward (although this is easily removed). Shaped like a plastic motor oil bottle, it holds approx 36 oz and measures 11-1/2" tall x 4-5/8" wide x 2" deep.

Newspaper Sudoku not tough enough for you? You show-off. Try solving the Sudokube®, the evil spawn of a rogue Rubik's Cube® and a wayward Sudoku maiden. You twist away at the 2" x 2" black-and-white plastic cube, until each of the (6) sides displays digits 1 through 9. Extra credit if they're all in the right order with the numbers facing the same way. Only took us 12 minutes, but we used a hacksaw and some epoxy. Packaging says it's "For Ages Over 5." Right.

Our absolute, all-time favorite commencement-special whacko dancing musical chicken. He (or she-it's sort of gender-free) is ultra-goofy, animatronic, and 7" tall with googly eyes and yellow plush feathers. Squeeze his arm and he marches to Pomp and Circumstance for a few feet, then switches to the madly increasing tempo of the (quite loud) Chicken Dance music for a total of 30 interminable seconds. (Luckily, the switch on his hand lets you turn him off at any time.) Comes complete with a mortarboard and tassel. Whyfor surplus? The little diploma rolled up in his hand says "2006." Snip it off and and replace it with one of your own, or just tape a new digit over the six, and he's anno-appropriate. You add (3) "AA" batteries and a graduation party.

Why didn't someone think of this before? Imagine a giant, 6-foot x 3.5-foot, tarp-like reinforced plastic garbage bag (.024" thick) that doubles as a picnic tablecloth. Spread it on the table and tighten the cord to secure it to the tabletop. When you're done eating and making a mess, loosen the cord, pull the bottom up and over the top and all the garbage, pull the cord tight and dump it. Brilliant, that's what it is. From Bulldog Tarps.

There are sounds that mosquitoes can't stand. And you can't make those sounds, unless you're Gilbert Gottfried or you have one of these special devices. You can get the wall-mounted/desktop version, 3-1/4" x 2-3/4" x 1-3/4" thick, with an on/off/intensity control. It comes with (3) "AA" batteries and has a plug for a 2.1mm adapter, which we don't have, you won't find, and don't need anyway. Or you can get the micro-mini, lipstick-sized repeller that measures 2-7/8" long x 7/8" oval, runs on a single "AA" battery (not included), and clips to your pocket.

Not that we'd ever put a cat in a hatbox. Makes them awfully upset. This is just a nice little tin box, 5-5/8" x 4" x 2" deep, with the eponymous hatted cat and his pals on the lid, which has a very slight center indent and curl to make it look like an open book. (The sides are painted to look like pages.) Perfect for toddler treasures.

Dwayne, guess what Momma gave me? It's this cute little orangey-smelling pen-shaped thing made by the Scotch® tape guys, only instead of writing, it takes away marker marks, and grease stains and such, and Momma says to me, "Shirley Sue, Honey," she says to me, "This is just the ticket to take off that sticky adhesive residue left on the pickup from all those 'Abandoned-Tow Away' stickers." And, Dwayne, it's over a third of an ounce, so there'll be plenty left to clean those lies about our Miranda off the front of her school locker, too. This surely is good stuff!
