Drinking Bird
A rather dumb looking 6" bird with a felt covered head and has plastic feet. Worse, he cannot get his fill of water. You buy the drinks. Fluid inside condenses from the evaporative cooling of the water off the bird's beak, making it top heavy and dunking it back into the water. The condensate rejoins the liquid pool in the bird's bulb, and he tips up again. Process continues indefinitely. It works, but it's not any more than moderately well made, and not any more than moderately priced. WARNING! The fluid and dye inside the bird can permanently stain, and the bird's glass body can easily be broken. Children are fascinated by the bobbing bird, and the educational possibilities are great. But they should watch it, not fondle it!!

Gyroscope

The bino eyepieces and objectives fold against the body with the objectives doubling as magnifiers when used alone. The signaling mirror makes a good examining table for bugs and seeds etc and is conveniently located under one of the lenses. It should make a good "going off to camp" gift!

Titled "The Field and Forest Handy Book," this volume has been justifiably in print since 1906. Written by Daniel C. "Uncle Dan" Beard, the founder of the Sons of Daniel Boone and one of the founders of the BSA, it's a compendium of eternally relevant woodland lore, from building cabins, sleds, boats, and bridges to camping in swamps. The only part we skipped was on how to cook a muskrat. (We know a place that delivers.) Loaded with illustrations. In soft cover from David Godine's Nonpareil Books; 428 pp.

Changeable Kaleidoscope
Imagine a kaleidoscope crossed with a viewmaster. The scope part is a thin 7-1/3" long triangular section with (13) 2-7/8" dia cardboard disks that fit on the end and do their kaleidoscopic thing. Ten of them are in various nature and astronomical themes (and have factoids on the back), and (3) are holographs/blanks for make-your-own fun. Works well without the disks, too; just stare down the scope and see your subject get kaleided.
