Need a combination tweezers/magnifying lens? This one wins hands down! Elegantly simple. Easy to use. The short but wide grips on the stainless steel tweezers offer better control, but still come to a fine point. The 7/8" dia acrylic lens is only 3.5X, as opposed to the 6X claimed, but 3.5 works for most jewelers, hobbyists, scientists, and mothers of sliver-impaled children. Sweet.

A hard-to-beat magnifier, especially for field work, where you may not have the light you need. The area below the 11/16" dia lens in this loupe is lit by a white LED (the 2 AG-12 batteries come with it). It's at least a 5X magnification but not, we feel, the 10X it claims on the case. It has a push-on, push-off switch. It swivels into a compact 2-1/2" x 1-1/4" x 3/4" metal cover, and can hang on a chain or stay in its plastic storage case, along with the tiny screwdriver that opens the battery compartment. Very illuminating.

They're made of braided twine, 19-1/2" long, each with at least a couple of beads. The one we saw had (3) large multi-color-embedded-in-black ceramic beads, but yours may differ. Made in India.

Soldering Gun in a Jar
Wire glue-the solution when you can't find the soldering iron, don't want to bother, are out in the woods, don't quite trust a fifth-grader with a hot gun, can't reach the connection with both hands, whatever. This stuff conducts low voltage AC and DC circuits in a permanent bond and is easy to use. Our high-tech support group suggests that a toothpick is a good way to apply it. Cures overnight. Our each is a 0.3 oz/9ml jar.

Lighted Loupe
For when you need things big and bright. The acrylic-lensed eye loupe has an adjustable white LED attached to the side, powered by a button cell battery that's included and replaceable. The lens is just under 7/8" dia on a 1" long loupe with a 1-1/4" eye port. The package says 10X, but it looks more like 5X to us, which is still good for a loupe. The battery life for the light is approx 22 hours.

21st Century Walking Stick
Walking sticks have moved into the space age! This walker's/hiker's friend has futuristic features and the look of an inter-galactic weapon. The high-quality collapsible aluminum stick extends from a packable 27" to a full 56", and has a carbide tip with a rubber cover, a removable 2" dia disk to keep the stick from sinking into soft ground, and an internal shock absorber that can be turned on or off. At the top, a 5-LED flashlight with a 90° pivot is embedded in a molded-plastic cane-style handle to light your way. For mountain trekking, lengthen the stick, slip the adjustable canvas wrist strap over your hand, and clutch the stick by the padded foam section below the cane handle. Or sort-of-locking. Push the plunger down and they lock in place, but push the 1/8" nipple down on a hard surface and they'll unlock for re-use. Handy in the shop or craft room for oil, grease, paints, and glues. (Also quite useful for getting liquid medication into the dog.) They measure 3-1/2" long x 9/16" dia and hold 5ml, are graduated in .2ml increments, and have threaded tops. Note the throwaway price.
