Digital Light Meter
This Velleman DVM 1300 Light Meter displays measurements between 0.1 and 50K lux in (5) different ranges on a liquid crystal display with (4) 1/2" high digits. Filtered 1-1/2" dia sensor on a 13" coiled cord. The 4-5/8" x 2-3/8" x 7/8" case has reflective tape on the back for dealing with a shadow. Comes in a vinyl case with a recommended-illumination chart and a 12-volt battery.

A Working Wonder
If we had a category just for customers who lust after Jules Verne inventions and elegant gadgetry, this would be in it. The wonderful brass sundial, a reproduction of an antique, is approx 3" dia x 11/16" thick overall, and actually works! A latitudinal gauge lets you tilt the engraved dial to the correct angle for your location, and a bubble and three leveling feet allow the 1-1/2" dia lock-down compass to point in the precise direction. And if you never took it out into the sunshine, you'd still love it for the look and logic of it.

Measuring pH
This handheld pH meter from Hanna Instruments measures 0-14 pH to 0.01 resolution, accurate to +/- 0.2. Calibration screw for 7.01, and another for 4.01 or 10.01 pH. The unit is 6-3/4" X 2" X 15/16" OA, with a 4-digit 1-1/8" X 1/2" LCD readout, and a replaceable 4-1/8" long x 9mm dia probe that screws into the case. Comes with a tip cover for the probe and (2) button-cell batteries. Don't forget to order the 20mL foil packs of pH 4.01, 7.01 or 10.01 Buffer Solution, with a chart listing the specific pH of the solution at various temperatures. How Hot Is It?
Point this puppy at HVAC, industrial hygiene or other equipment, and find out. From Sper Scientific, this pen-type infrared thermometer has a range of -27°F to 428°F with 0.5° resolution, or -33°C to 220°C with 0.2° resolution. Accurate ± 2.5% or 2.5°C, whichever is greater. Pocket-clippable at 6" long x 1/2" dia, it also has a white LED with a latching push on/push off switch. Includes (1) "AAA" battery for the LED and (2) button cell batteries for the thermometer. A good-looking brushed steel and aluminum, it comes in a brushed steel case. Useful from the lab to the kitchen, and fun, CJ says, for adults of all ages.

Cell Phone LCDs
These would be take-outs from cell phones, if they had ever gotten into any. As it is, these LCDs are new, and relative unknowns. One LCD measures 1-1/2" x 1" x 1/16" thick and has connection pads that run along one of the long edges. The second LCD is 1-7/8" x 1-1/2" and has surface-mounted components and sundry IC and jumper sockets. It measures 2-1/8" x 1-5/8" x 5/32" overall. Sorry, no pin-out information available.
