Someday when you're lost in the woods, you'll be very, very glad you ordered this compact survival kit. It's the classic camp director's whistle, raised to new heights. The 4-1/2" x 1-1/8" dia orange-plastic treasure hangs around your neck on a yellow nylon cord. On one end, the whistle. On the other, a compass. Unscrew the compass, and it reverses to a signal mirror, and reveals a 2-1/2" deep waterproof compartment for aspirin or medicinal brandy - or for the matches you're going to strike against the 3/4" long sparker. No, it's not overkill for a teacher to wear it on the playground. 'S cool.

Cheaper -- a whole lot cheaper -- than hiring a guide, plus these fit in your pocket (which is only true of the tiniest human guides). These hunting and fishing helpers are written and illustrated by professionals and are dense with information and step-by-step, full-color instructions for deer and duck hunters and fisherpersons. They're printed on heavy laminated 8-1/2" x 11" stock folded to a pocket-sized 4-1/4" x 5-1/2". The series includes how to site and work a deer stand; place your shot effectively and safely; field dress and quarter a deer; identify diving and puddle ducks; cast for and trigger bass; work with minnow rigs; identify trout, salmon and catfish -- plus how to stay alive and stop the bleeding when things go a touch wrong. Original retail price of each was $4.95.

OK, it's a strip of copper 5-3/16" long x 3/4" wide x .041" thick, but CJ says if you "take this, a zinc electrode and a grapefruit to the science fair, you get at least a C." Equally useful for crafters and jewelry makers.

C'mon baby, light someone's fire with this magnesium and flint fire-starter kit. The 3" steel hack-saw-type blade and a 3-1/8" x 3/8" x 1-1/8" hunk of magnesium, with a rod of flint embedded in one long side, are on a keychain for carrying but are easily removed from it. With the serrated edge of the blade, shave some Mg into a small pile of tinder. Strike the flint with the opposite edge to spark the tinder-Mg's interest, and you're Prometheus.

Well, yes, it will tie up a pretty substantial pet (the working load is 211 lbs) but it's really rope made from recycled P.E.T. (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic bottles, by a small Brazilian community of 380 people. You get 50 feet of 1/4" dia braided monofilament rope, 4X more resistant to UVA/UVB rays than polypropylene. Assorted colors, our choice.

Not fishnet stockings, but netting for actual fish, direct from the U.S. Army (you'd think Navy, wouldn't you?) in olive drab. It's a survival thing. You get a 10-foot x 5-foot net made of 3/4" squares individually knotted from twisted cotton/nylon, so the net won't unravel if torn. Might have a slightly musty aroma (but definitely not fishy) that a little sunshine time will fix. Great for maritime-theme decoration, bible-camp plays (filled until breaking, walking-on-water background prop…) or, we suppose, fishing. And perfect if you want to go to a costume party as Poseidon.

Slip it into your wallet or hang it on your keychain, then go get lost.
