It's either a telescoping aluminum backscratcher, a fork for people whose elbows don't bend, or a sand rake for miniature Zen gardens. You pick. The 5-draw shaft extends from 6-5/8" to 20-3/8" long, the 5-tine rake is 1-3/16" wide, and it has a pocket clip.

We collected it ourselves, from local students. (Just a little joke, teachers.) What we have here is bacteria-experiment kit for classroom use with (2) 200ml bottles of prepared nutrient agar, (20) sterile Petri dishes, (10) sterile swabs, and (4) instruction sheets. Made for individual experiments or for use with (4) groups of up to (6) students. Use it to test common surfaces, do clean hands/dirty hands or clean mouth/dirty mouth tests of soap and mouthwash, or compare students' mouths to a dog's mouth, if you have a dog handy.

Sextants came along after astrolabes but before GPS. (Just like you.) They're used for finding latitude and the distance between objects, and are still the non-electric, non-satellite-dependent back-up for navigators. Ours is a beauty in solid brass with glass optical components, at a tiny price. Measures approx 4-5/8" x 4-1/4" x 3-1/4" OA and comes in a very nice wooden case. Includes instructions for use, which you're going to need unless you went to Annapolis where they still teach it because computers can still go all kaflooey. (Note that well before computers started going kaflooey, compasses and sextants lost an adventurer here and there, too, so don't call us if you and the sextant set out for Madagascar and end up in Iceland.)

Cheaper -- a whole lot cheaper -- than hiring a guide, plus these fit in your pocket (which is only true of the tiniest human guides). These hunting and fishing helpers are written and illustrated by professionals and are dense with information and step-by-step, full-color instructions for deer and duck hunters and fisherpersons. They're printed on heavy laminated 8-1/2" x 11" stock folded to a pocket-sized 4-1/4" x 5-1/2". Each Field Guide series includes (6) different guides: How to site and work a deer stand; place your shot effectively and safely; field dress and quarter a deer; identify diving and puddle ducks. Each Fish Guide series includes (6) different guides: How to cast for and trigger bass; work with minnow rigs; identify trout, salmon and catfish -- plus how to stay alive and stop the bleeding when things go a touch wrong. Original retail price of each separate guide was $4.95.
