Care to sneak a little scientific education in with all the Hogwart’s wizardry? For ages 8 and up, the Simple Physics kit explains some basics with a few props (balls and sticks) and a binder-ready guide to experiments that appear to be spells and magic. The Astronomy kit includes a nice guide to the basics, including a constellation map, plus instructions and real lenses for constructing a simple telescope. All with appropriate Hogwarts insignia.

Mega-cool toy air cannon. Birthdays will never be the same! The instructions on the AirZooka" say it blasts a gust (ball?) of air up to 20 feet but we blew out a candle at 30 feet, and it only took us three tries. (And you can hear the near-misses as they blow past--which is the mega-cool part.) Plastic, 11" dia x 10 1/2" deep, like a bucket with a pistol grip and a fold-down sight. The (3) segments unscrew and collapse for storage between birthdays. We'll pick fluorescent blue, green, magenta or orange, and you'll need two if you want to have air wars.

Or singing suppositories. The pair is very magnetic, whatever they are. The 1-3/4" long oblate spheroids look like highly polished black hematites. Hold them an inch apart in your palm, toss 'em into the air and listen to them make a sound like the cyber-crickets. Or an electrocuted chicken. The manufacturer suggests keeping these mega-magnets away from computers, pacemakers, TV sets and credit cards.

One part at a time. We'll pick (2) different parts from our rubber body part assortment of little hands, feet, brains, hearts, skeletons and eyeballs. Drop them in a glass of water and watch as they grow to (6) times their original size over a few days. Dry 'em out and watch 'em (very slowly) shrink back. Repeat as necessary for your amusement.

Actually, it runs like an electromagnetic top, which is to say for a week or so, or however long the 9V battery lasts, so the manufacturer says. As we type, the one on the desk has been spinning for a touch over (5) hours and doesn't look tired. The black-plastic base is 3-1/2" dia x 1-1/4" high, with a secret compartment for the battery - so you can lie to people about the mysterious physics of spinning tops. The 1" tall top itself is silver and oil-can shaped.

Or an effective child-silencing puzzle, anyway. This clever thingy is a 10-1/4" long x 3-1/2" dia clear plastic tube full of plastic sprinkles (Jimmies, for those of you on the East Coast) with (47) slightly larger trinkets (a bell, pearl, baseball, penny, etc.) lost among them. The silent child sits in the back seat and turns the tube around and around while trying to find them and checking them off the enclosed list (you'll get a 50-sheet pad of them) and the next thing you know you're there yet. And yes, the octagonal ends are securely glued on so they can't open it and dump the sprinkles all over, the diabolical little rugrats. Also strangely compelling for fully grown adults. At least around here. Made in the USA.

Makes us want to dance every time we wind up one of these clever/goofy fools. The little 3-1/2" tall squarehead with the smiley face does what some of us (of a certain age) believe is a modified bugaloo. Very nice hip action, a rotating tummy, and watch out for those swinging arms. If you've ever said "to live is to dance, to dance is to live," you need this guy. We'll send you a red, grey or blue version, but frankly, you ought to have to a pair, because nobody likes to boogie alone.

I flung my bug into the air.
It fell to earth in sister’s hair.
Her look was cold, invectives rang.
I never should have flang that thang!
Reach out with one of these stretchy, sticky toys and touch someone, like your sister, or one of her squeamish friends. With practice, you can grab a paper from a desk several feet away. The neon–yellow butterfly is about 2” long, and on a 10” string of the same stretchy goop, and have 3” plastic handles for better flinging. Our package of (2) ensures that you’ll have a spare after the first one is confiscated.

Plus, of course, the one you already know how to make, but imagine how sick your kids are of that one. This highly origamian, 120pp book has the plans for (25) ingenious paper airplanes, including some stunt fliers. Our favorite is The Flying Pig because you can make "when pigs fly" jokes at meetings and then use the agenda to construct it. Written by David Mitchell for PRC Publishing.

A nice little glow-in-the-dark optical toy. Spin the 3-3/4" steel disc (slowly) on its dimple and watch the GITD patterns change. Best in a darkened room, like a lot of things.

Our PC-9 rubber-band powered styro airplane boasts a big, long rubber power plant, plastic prop, and landing gear. Measures 15" nose to tail with an 18" wingspan. Takes some light assembly but, the directions say, "when you play this plane very proficiently, you will find that it can be made more wonderful flying ways." Indeed. Rated for 200 feet of flight (80% longer than the Wright brother's first flight!), but we'd avoid really windy days for the best proficiently flying.
