Mylar Warmth
They have the look of something designed for the space program. They're mylar, a paper-thin shiny metallic sheet, that comes in handy when your car breaks down in winter, or when you're separated from your climbing group on the slopes of Mt. McKinley. Barring that, they're also a perfect material for a do-it-yourself cold-climate Halloween costume-near impossible to rip by hand, but cut easily with scissors. There's no padding, so they wouldn't be too comfy on your bed, but they sure are warm. They both come folded about the size of a wallet. The Blanket is 52" x 82", the Sleeping Bag is 34" x 84".

Camera Tripod
A tripod with true portability -- It weighs only 2 lbs, the 4-ft aluminum legs (which can be locked down independently at any length) telescope to a convenient 22", and it slips easily into a zippered black-nylon quiver. The mast, which has a standard 1/4-20 camera mount and a built-in level, can be cranked up (literally) another 9-1/2". The manufacturer doesn't say how much weight the tripod will bear, but we'd keep it to under 10 lbs. Very nice for the money.

Mini Squeegee
The whole office can be full of dust-free monitor screens, thanks to the hero who handed out dry squeegees to everyone! The 3-7/8" wide plastic scrapers (very assorted colors, our choice) have a 1/4" wide strip of something fuzzy on one side to sweep lint and dust from the glass. When the air conditioner goes berserk, you can flip them over to scrape off the frost. You want to be a real hero, give them extras for their windshields.

Flying With Film
You’d think a lead-lined bag would weigh more! Even holding film cartridges, these are light enough for your carry-on luggage. The lead-lined paper bag that is 19-1/2” x 12” wide opens to 3-3/4”. The 24-1/2” x 16-3/4” wide bag opens to 4”. Check the Web for hints on how best to protect your film with them.

Throw a Net over It, Marge!
We wouldn't try to capture 'gators with it, but this 4-ft x 6-ft black nylon, elastic (not-un-bungie-like) cargo net should trap anything else in the back of the pickup, van or kids' bedrooms. Stretches to about 6' x 9', with openings that are 7" square, stretching to maybe a foot, and 16 carabiner-style plastic hooks. Or just hang a couple on a wall for a nice Spiderman effect.

"Stars And Planets"
From the Princeton Field Guides series, this 400-page volume is written by Ian Ridpath and illustrated by Wil Tirion. Filled with charts and maps of the night sky, along with color photos and illustrations, it's highly detailed, dense and informative -- and printed on heavy, coated stock in a portable 4-1/2" x 7-1/2" paperback size. Third edition, from Princeton University Press. Spans beginners to advanced stargazers. Very nice.

Capital of Belarus? Minsk!
If they saw this color map eight times a day, they'd know where every place is-and its capital. Snap this tough, 8.5" x 11" laminated sheet into a school notebook and eventually they'll have to read it. It's a very nice world map with capital cities on one side, a U.S. map with state capitals on the other. It includes other major cities plus partial Canadian and Mexican bonus areas. Current, barring a coup since we got our latest shipment.

Travel Pouch
Runner's wallet, a very small shoulder bag, or a holder that lets you carry stuff either in or out of sight. This is a 5" x 4-1/2" black or blue nylon pouch with a clear vinyl pocket, large enough to hold/display a passport, driver's license or company ID. On the reverse side are a full-length zipper compartment and a 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" zipper compartment. The sewn-on 44" long neck-cord has a slide adjustment.

Be Like A Boy Scout
Always be prepared. Even if it's not raining, toss one of these one-size-fits-pretty-much-everybody (they're 50" x 80") yellow or clear polyethylene hooded ponchos in the car, another in your backpack, a third in your coat pocket or purse. They're thin, emergency-type protection and come folded up in a packet about 3" x 5" x 1/2" thick. You get (3) because you just can't be too prepared.
