Fascinations® are fascinating! This smooth, 4" dia Fascinations globe has labeled silver land masses and dark blue seas. It hangs, suspended only by electromagnetic forces, inside an 8" tall matte-finish silver-colored C-frame. A gentle breeze or vibration, and it slowly rotates. No batteries to wear down -- it comes with a 6-ft power cord/adapter. An absolutely mesmerizing -- and educational -- desk toy.

Why does it do that? Develop an elemental understanding of magnetism, electromagnetism, electrochemistry, radio, thermodynamics, light and optics. Simon Quellen Field's 228-page paperback, Gonzo Gizmos, Projects & Devices to Channel your Inner Geek explains processes, equipment and scientific terms -- and then, for starters, tells you things like how to make a rotary steam engine in 15 minutes from a soda can, a candle and a few scraps of rubber tubing. It's the favorite of our resident geeks -- but not for kids unless they're working with an adult. That would be a mature adult. An insured, mature adult.

Our each is a pack of (3) Z-Line" mechanical pencils in assorted barrel colors -- probably one each in red, green and blue. A cap with a pocket clip hides an eraser. They come, and can be refilled, with 0.5 mm lead. And they're cheap enough that you need several for home, and several more for the office.

Have the Time of your Life! Roll through a reel of 1960s microfilm of Time or Life magazines (that's what we've found so far). See page after page of crisp black-and-white ads, articles and photographs reduced to transparencies approx 3/4" x 5/8". The 1-3/8" wide 35mm film is on a 3-5/8" dia reel that fits on a square spindle keyed at one corner. Great fun with a little help from technology!

Wouldn't mind getting these our ownse'f, as they say in the South. A very nice modular screwdriver set with (7) double-bit shafts and a 4" long handle with a threaded collet, a striated rubber grip and a spinning jeweler's top for easy one-hand use. The shafts are 4-3/4" long OA and can be adjusted from 4" long to 3/4" long for close work. The business ends include: T6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 15 and 20 TORX bits; #00, #0 and #1 Phillips bits; and 2mm, 3mm and 4mm slotted bits. You might notice that 7 shafts X 2 ends = 14, but there are 13 sizes listed. How come? Seems there are (2) T15s, which doesn't bother us a bit.

Wrongo. It's "a girl with kaleidoscope eyes," you doofus. And her peepers are just like this very excellent kaleidoscope with a big clear glass marble eye at one end, so everything you point it at is kaleidoscoped. You ought to see how cool the giant frog on our desk looks all split up into funky geometric patterns. And you could, if you bought this. And if you had a giant frog. The device is an 8-1/4" long x 1" dia cardboard tube covered with diffraction grating paper (we'll pick 2 different colors and/or patterns), with a triple FS mirror inside. Would make a honey of an inspirational tool for fabric designers and artists, too.

Nothing to it with William Gurstelle's "Backyard Ballistics," a soft-cover, 169pp compendium by an engineer on constructing rockets, cannons (carbide and spud), flingers, tennis ball mortars, balloons, fire kites, and other intriguing devices, all with common household materials. The detailed text includes parts lists, illustrated instructions, photos and quite sensible and necessary safety precautions. From Chicago Review Press.

You can all write secret, invisible notes to each other with these medium-point marker sets. The white marker writes with invisible ink. The black one seems to write in black ink-but cover the invisible message with that black ink, and the writing shows up in red. Eventually. So if the secret police catch you and scribble on your message with the black marker, it may take a while to show up. With luck, it'll be long enough for you to talk your way out being grounded, and to eat the message. You'll get (5) sets of 5"- long pens.

Big ol' bunch of markers. Six dozen (72) wedge-tipped art makers, 5-1/2" long with 3/16" tips, in black, grey, brown, dark and light blue, yellow, orange, green and pink - more of some colors than others. The surplus angle? The (12) pink ones are dried out. Which leaves (60) that are all moist, happy, and ready to mark. Made in the USA.
